Galway are anxiously awaiting the results of an X-ray which was carried out on Joe Canning after yesterday's Allianz Hurling League semi-final defeat to Waterford.

The Portumna sharpshooter was stretchered from the field following a heavy challenge by Kevin Moran as he bore down on goal during the closing stages of the game at Nowlan Park.

"He's literally still being assessed by our medical team, so until they determine what it is, we'll be acting upon it tonight or tomorrow," Galway manager Micheal Donoghue said in the Irish Independent.

"I think it was his groin. He took a few heavy hits on it and I'd be intrigued to watch it back and see the hits he got going into it, just before it (the tackle)."

Despite missing out on a place in next Sunday's final, Donoghue felt the Allianz League had served its purpose for Galway.

"Our agenda at the start of the league was to see could we find a few players. So we're happy enough going away now in terms of our championship preparation."
