Liam Sheedy is set to make a sensational return to the Tipperary hurling hot-seat.

According to a report in the Irish Independent, Sheedy's name is expected to be put forward for ratification at a county board meeting next Monday night. His 'second coming' as manager comes eight years after he led the Premier County to All-Ireland glory and stopped Kilkenny's 'drive for five' in the process. He called time on his three-year reign shortly afterwards.

The surprise development comes after All-Ireland U21 winning manager Liam Cahill and former All-Ireland winning minor supremo William Maher had both been heavily linked to the position, which was vacated by Michael Ryan following Tipp's early championship exit this year.

The Bank of Ireland director, who is the chairman of Sport Ireland's high performance unit and a member of the Irish Sports Council, chaired the Hurling 2020 Committee between 2012 and 2015 as well as acting as an adviser to Eamonn Kelly in Offaly and Terence McNaughton in Antrim in recent years.

Sheedy was also believed to be in the running for the GAA director-general's job which was filled by Carlow native Tom Ryan earlier this year.
