Athlone football legend John McCann of Glenard Road, Salthill, County Galway passed away on Sunday, November 13th, 2016. John was an outstanding and highly versatile player on the legendary Athlone six-in-a-row SFC-winning team of 1955-60. Originally from Longford, he had the distinction of playing intercounty football with both his native county and Westmeath. A true icon in the annals of Athlone, Westmeath and Longford GAA, John attended a 50th-anniversary banquet in Aras Chiarain in 2010 to commemorate and honour the six-in-a-row side, the likes of whom we will never see again.
