Five candidates to be interviewed for Westmeath post

Westmeath hurlers will have a new manager for the 2020 campaign.

The search to find a new Westmeath senior hurling manager will take a step closer to completion this week as the interview process begins.

The Westmeath Independent reports that five candidates will be interviewed for the position with the front runner being Shane O’Brien who had a coaching role in former manager Joe Quaid’s backroom team.

It is not known who else is in the running, but there is speculation that former under-21 county manager Adrian Moran is also in the running.

One man that will not be going forward is former Kilkenny goalkeeper and Westmeath coach during Michael Ryan’s reign, Michael Walsh, who has ruled himself out due to work commitments.

Westmeath chairman Billy Foley revealed that the interviews will take place this week and he was confident that they would have a name to put forward at the next county board meeting.

“We expect to nominate the right candidate at the next county board meeting and it will then be up to the delegates to ratify our nomination,” said Foley.

“It’s very important that we get the right man as soon as possible. Westmeath hurling is currently in a good state of health and we want to continue and build on that success.”
