Roscommon under-20 football manager Shane Curran believes that the Connacht championship ‘doesn’t give smaller counties like Roscommon a chance’.

Speaking to the Roscommon Herald ahead of their provincial U20 clash against Leitrim in Carrick-on-Shannon tonight, the former county goalkeeper revealed that the scheduling of the campaign makes it very hard for smaller counties to compete.

Roscommon are without a number of key players ahead of the clash and preparations haven’t been the easiest for Curran and his management team.

“The competition doesn’t give smaller counties like Roscommon a chance. I thought it was bad last year, but this year is worse. But a lot of the counties like ourselves are in the same boat,” said Curran.

“Roscommon and Leitrim have to play three games in 14 days just to win a Connacht final. Mayo have a game less, so, as a weaker county, we’re being punished.

“It’s very difficult to prepare a team in those circumstances. I’d say Leitrim will be rubbing their hands at the prospect at getting a shot at us. We have it all to do.”
