Laois defender Matthew Whelan believes a win in the Joe McDonagh Cup final would make up for a number of unfruitful years in the county jersey.

Whelan is one of the most experienced players in the Laois team and a lot will depend on his marshalling of Westmeath dangerman Killian Doyle on Sunday.

And he told the Leinster Express that Laois will have to be at their best to see off the challenge of a good Westmeath side.

“It will be a tough outing. They’ve been excellent this year. They won their own division in the league and they’re in good form in the Joe McDonagh,” said Whelan.

“We’ve a lot of experience playing against them the last couple of years and there’s always been not too much between us. They beat us last year in our home ground so we’re under no illusions as to what we’re facing in Croke Park. The match the previous weekend gone by, that was only shadow boxing.”
