Ryan: mistake to move All-Ireland final

Tipperary manager Michael Ryan lifts the Liam McCarthy Cup with selectors Declan Fanning, Conor Stakelum and John Madden

Michael Ryan believes the All-Ireland SHC final should not have been switched from the first weekend of September.

As part of the overhaul of the hurling championships which comes into effect next year, the Liam MacCarthy Cup decider will now take place in August. Next year's final will be played on August 19th.

"It's only a personal opinion but I think bringing forward the final is a mistake," the 2016 All-Ireland winning Tipperary boss is quoted in The Irish Independent. "The first Sunday in September was always All-Ireland final day. There was something special about it.

"I understand the arguments in favour of bringing it forward and I'm not anti-change but I just feel that date in our diary was a permanent fixture. I feel it is the right time to conclude the championship."

Ryan also feels that the introduction of a round-robin Munster championship was unnecessary: "Did the Munster championship need any tinkering with? I would say no, but it has happened so we have to get on with it."
