The late Niall Laverty

Down GAA has been shocked and saddened by the sudden death of 19-year-old Niall Laverty from Saul.

The teenager, who was about to begin a sports studies degree at Ulster University, was vice-captain of the St Patrick's Grammar School, Downpatrick team that won the MacLarnon Cup earlier this year. Niall played Gaelic football with Saul and hurling with Ballygalget. He was also a member of Ballynagross FC.

Leading the tributes to Niall, St Patrick's Grammar School said in a statement: "He was captain of many teams throughout the school and was a true inspiration to his team-mates. A team player in every sense, he was selfless in his displays and always helped wherever he could.

"Niall put the team first and did any job asked of him. His coaches had no hesitation in awarding him player of the year on a team of outstanding players. Niall was an outstanding young man - thoughtful, caring, lovable - and was a close friend to many of our former and current pupils."
