Former Monaghan midfielder Dick Clerkin says he’s “very apprehensive” about the next few months as GAA games across the country get set to resume this weekend.

Clerkin, who is a member of the GAA's Covid-19 Advisory Committee, says there has been no individual that has contracted coronavirus from playing games but says he has fears over complacency going forward.

Speaking on RTE 2FM’s Game on, the Currin native commented: "Speaking personally - I'm not speaking for the committee here - I'm very apprehensive.  I think there's an element of complacency. But you don't have to look too far to see that things can go wrong. 

"To think we're out of the woods is being a bit naive. All this talk like club v county, all these old chestnuts cropping up.

"I just find them very frustrating. Come October or November, if the only we're talking about is the unfairness of the provincial system and club v county and all the rest, I'll be delighted. Because that means the Covid stuff has worked and we've done the right things. But I think all that talk is too far ahead.”

He added: "We've a few milestones ahead, we've to get through all the training, get clubs back playing for a couple of months and have no step back. And then we can worry about all the other stuff. But I would be apprehensive because I think there's an element where we're getting too far ahead of ourselves.”
