Cillian O'Connor fires in Mayo's second goal against Meath at Croke Park

Cillian O’Connor, who this year became the championship’s all-time top scorer, says football is a team sport.

O’Connor eclipsed Colm Cooper’s all-time summer scoring record during the first-round Super 8s defeat to Kerry and has since moved ten points ahead of the Kingdom legend, his 1-5 haul against Meath on Sunday bringing his eye-watering tally to 24-290.

“It didn’t come into my head in the preparation for the Kerry game. It was a huge championship game, a huge day for the team,” the Ballintubber sharpshooter told The Irish Sun. “We wanted to win and that was genuinely all I was thinking about.

“Then after the game all my thought was just disappointment that we didn’t get the points. Maybe down the line people will be proud and stuff like that but it’s a team sport.”
