Leitrim GAA thread - 5 Like(s)

Replying To martinjoe:  "While it is factual to say that Leitrim are indeed to top scorers in all divisions of the league, and that Leitrim came within a score or two of promotion, it is no less a fact that the county remains in the bottom half of Division 4 along with London, Carlow and Waterford. I am sure the 24 teams outside of division 4 would have chalked up fancy scores v the 4 teams at the foot of div 4, if they had the opportunity! Hopefully players, mentors and supporters will have a great few days in the big apple and rack up another impressive score against a team that have never won an intercounty game, a team who haven't played an intercounty game in over a year, and give it everything then to get over Sligo. While my own county have 2 very tough assignments if we are to reach the final I hope we can do it. It would be such a carnival atmosphere meeting Leitrim or Sligo in the final, rather than the nailbiters of the past decade. The pundits, and indeed some of our supporters, will be hand wringing about the mismatch and the need for seedings etc, but in all truth, there nothing more satisfying than heading to a final, with the only question to be decided, yes, will they hold the deficit to 20 points?"
And then people wonder why other Connacht counties find it hard to support Mayo and laugh at their inevitable tears each year when once again they fail miserably on the big stage

We'll win it - 3 Like(s)

Replying To martinjoe:  "I often wonder what the team talk consists of in the outsiders dressing room in games like this where a team is 100/1 on to win and the outcome is certain. I suppose they will either park a bus and try to keep the margin as low as possible or go out and enjoy it, give it a go . Surely no manager would be trying to convince a division 4 team that they can take down all Ireland finalists?"
Same attitude and team talk as Mayo when they face Dublin. An inevitable hammering but false deluded hope

Galway underperformed and Sligo performance exceeded our expectations. Disappointed not to get the win when winning in injury time but we are proabbaly better off in TC. A real chance of doing very well in that if perform like today. The biggest disappointment today was the poor crowd. Sligo winning in injury time and at no stage did the crowd get behind the team. I know expectations are low but the difference in a game like that can be a lift from a home support

Round 3 Neutral Venues All Ireland - 2 Like(s)

Replying To DuhallowRed:  "I'm not for the neutral venue, I think the provincial winner should get the two home games, the only advantage of winning your province is top seed"
Another incentive that might help the provincials from becoming irrelevant

I think a few people are misinterpreting what I said I am definite in favour of having group stage and getting more games for the young players to develop The mini league I am referring to is the tie break situation when 3 or more teams are tied on points, they create a mini league using the 3 teams involved head to head games and ignore the other games to determine who goes through. The old system of the overall score difference across all games was much clearer

It looks like Covid is going to be the thing that ruins our chance of winning the All Ireland, the only thing that could have stopped us, shame Dublin's 6 in a row will be a hollow victory and will always remembered that it was not their efforts on the pitch that won them the title but rather Covid's efforts off the field. Sligo CB should request an asterisk be forever put beside the winners name to reflect this

Sligo fans would prefer travelling to Dublin than travelling to Roscommon. Let's be honest, Dublin against Sligo will be a blow out so at least a day out for the supporters in Croke Park would be better than being hammered and been in Roscommon

Replying To Sligonian:  "By all accounts yesterday was very poor. McEntee himself said he was "mad" is more his emotions after the game. Carrying into 3 players, giving away possession, very poor discipline, several frees brought forward, no punch, going nowhere with the ball. McEntee said the pressure of Div3 maybe an issue for the players. Ball in possession a problem. " our target is to be promoted, hopefully as champions" easily said. Most reports I got were, we looked a mess, we look like no gameplan, didn't know what to do, no structure to our attacks, This is McEntee's 4th year and he pretty much uses the same players, should he not be mad at himself? Does the team not reflect the manager and his mistakes. We were here last year after Laois. He picked an atrocious team that day and I was angry when I saw the 26 and then starting 15 yday. 4 or 5 of the starting 15 wouldn't make the 26 if I was manager and players continue to regress within this set up. I have always felt it was a mistake keeping McEntee on another year. I think he's very poor on team selection and tactics. I don't really see how he develops or improves players. Where is the evidence? 3 months of preparation and 3 years of developing that squad and your team produces that yday? For me we were always far more likely to go down than up. The players and management can talk about promotion all they want but you keep picking this starting 15 and you'll get a rude awakening. We are vunerable against Wicklow but starting Alan Mcloughlin and home advantage should see us win that one. Towey will be suspended. Hopefully Canice and Joe make the 26. Hopefully we can stay up as its like its going to be tough year for the seniors."
"starting Alan Mcloughlin and home advantage should see us win that one. Towey will be suspended. Hopefully Canice and Joe make the 26" Some might accuse you of having a Molaise bias. From the reports I heard, Joe was very poor in recent challenge games so I don't see him breaking into the team this year

Replying To Anto:  "Moycullen pulled away in the end. The game was close for the majority of the game. There were goal chances to make the scoreline closer which we not taken. I will always defend the club from begrudging and jealous attacks form people like yourself. Maybe you should concentrate on your own club in getting to the standards required at competing at the top level rather than knocking the most successful club in the county."
Nobody is knocking Tubbercurry

I would be happy to see McEntee stay another year. There was definite improvement this year and besides the Laois game, Sligo were dominant in Division 4 although they let teams back into games too many times when we were by far the better team. We also destroyed London and New York which other years we and many other counties have struggled I am only going to judge him by results this year Division 1 teams - played 3, lost 3 heavily Division 2 teams - played 1, drew 1 Division 3 teams - played 0 Division 4 teams - played 10, won 9 I think this shows us we are a Division 3 side, I dont know if playing in Sam McGuire will have any benefit and if we have actually learnt anything we didnt already know. People want a new manager but even after all the great results and progress Mickey Harte has made with Louth, they lost by over 20 points to both Dublin and Kerry. There is always hearsay about who is going well at training, it's a great problem to have that we have a decent team now and 2 years of u20 teams that are working away with S&C in background and will be pushing for places next year that will hopefully drive on this team. I cant see O'Boyle being ahead of Carrabine, Murphy, O'Connor, Reilly or Spillane at this stage but maybe Sligonian you could drop one of them from the match day panel and bring in O'Boyle who just joined the panel ahead of them for the final game of the year

Replying To onthefortyfive:  "Agree in full, but why would we copy a county like Kerry in relation to improving the standard of football in Sligo!! What would they know after all they have only 30+ All Ireland's!!!"
Yes, I mean why didn't anyone else think of that, copy Kerry and we be winning All Irelands. Fact is many counties have tried and failed, what works in Kerry hasn't worked anywhere else

Replying To Galway9801:  "Forgive my ignorance, and going slightly off topic. If 3 teams get out of the group, what happens after? I'd assumed that only 2 teams get out of the 4 groups, and there we have our quarter finals?"
the 4 teams who finish top go into quarter finals then there is provisional quarters where the 2nd place team in a group would play the 3rd in another group The four preliminary quarter-finals will consist of the second placed teams being at home to third place teams, subject to avoiding of repeat provincial final pairings and where possible repeat pairings from Round One

Replying To NewSligofan:  "Agreed. It is all about bringing through 1 or 2 players in to their senior panel each year. No worries about winning trophies or going off amalgamating with other clubs at underage. Themselves, Castleconnor and Curry are the 3 clubs I admire most I'm this county. No feeling sorry for themselves as small clubs. Minor 'A' finals were on this weekend. 7 clubs involved. Says it all really."
And look where that has got Curry and Castleconnor? What works for on, doesn't necessarily work for another

Well done Leitrim, a great win under pressure. A big game next weekend now, score difference now could be massive and Sligo look to be the side with worst score difference.

Replying To shligorovers:  "Don't think they will bring the championship forward even if Sligo get beat at the weekend would probably be unfair on the club players who might have made plans etc. Think the intermediate will be between Shamrock Gaels and Calry. I cant see any of the other clubs pushing these two. In the Senior's its Tourlestrane to lose in my opinion. Chasing pack be between Marys, Coolaney and Tubber. All depends who gets out of the group of death."
Calry will do well to win intermediate, they might need to get relegated from Senior first Curry to win intermediate
