The Connacht Council is insisting that Galway and Roscommon must play their remaining round robin game against each other in the FBD League next weekend - even though both of them have qualified for next month's final.

And the provincial body said that the other remaining pool game, another dead rubber between Sligo and Mayo, will go ahead as planned next week.

Galway and Roscommon have qualified for the final of the league - the final was fixed for February 18 at the outset of the competition - but will now have to go through a dress rehearsal next weekend, a week before they open their national league campaigns.

But Roscommon manager Kevin McStay wants the FBD League final to take place next weekend and give the players  a break during the national league.

However, a spokesperson for the Connacht Council said that it will go ahead on February 18 as planned and that all counties will be expected to fulfil the final round next weekend even though the final pairing has been decided.

"We have to protect the integrity of the competition and play the final round as scheduled, with the final going ahead as planned next month," said the spokesperson.

But Roscommon boss McStay said this doesn't make sense and he wants the final to take place next Friday night.

"We have started the process to see if we can double it up. They are all talking about player welfare, couldn't we double it up and save us the 18^th of February? We'd like to play it next Friday.

"We have a club, Michael Glaveys in an All-Ireland final next Sunday. All our players want to go to the match and support their colleagues and we as management want to go and see them as well.

"We think this game can be played Friday night, we will travel, just pick a venue," he said.
