Yvonne Bonner of Donegal celebrates

Donegal ladies have been dealt a huge blow ahead of this summer with the news that Yvonne Bonner will not be returning to their squad for the championship.

The Donegal News reports this week that Bonner has decided to stay in Australia after enjoying an impressive debut season in the WAFL with the Greater Western Sydney Giants.

The Glenfin native, who collected the Giants’ Goal of the Year accolade earlier this year, is set to be a huge loss to Tir Chonaill boss Maxi Curran.

“It’s a tough one,” said Curran. “People looking around the dressing room and looking for characters and leaders…it gives a certain amount of comfort to younger girls.

“Yvonne is certainly one of those. We’re quite fortunate that we have a very good group of forwards already. You have Geraldine McLaughlin, Niamh Hegarty and Karen Guthrie who is playing the football of her life. But there is no denying Yvonne is a class act. We’d have loved to have been looking forward to her coming back in.”
