O'Byrne Cup serves its purpose for Connerton

Longford manager Denis Connerton feels that the O'Byrne Cup served its purpose as they prepare for the opening round of the NFL.

The Midlanders were involved in a piece of history last weekend when a free taking shoot out was needed to decide their clash against Meath in the semi-final.

The Royals won and advance to the final on Sunday, but Connerton is not too disheartened to be out of the early season competition with their opening NFL Division Three game against Offaly in nine days time.

"From the outset we said the game against Meath was a bonus match for us," Connerton told the Longford Leader. "We got our match and we got a good performance.

"We are looking at Offaly, that's when the National League will start for us. It's a tough game for us as we have lost there on the last two occasions.

"Now we have got to get our full focus on that game and see how we can get on."
