Both officials and players are struggling to get used to the new rule which allows no more than three consecutive hand passes is proving difficult to implement, with the Tyrone v Derry McKenna Cup semi-final on Sunday a case in point.

The tie was officiated by Down’s Ciarán Brannigan, a regular on the intercounty scene and a well-regarded official, but a short video montage put together by Ben McGuckin of OakLeaf TV showed that Brannigan, like many other officials, is having difficulty implementing the rule with players also struggling.

On a number of occasions more than three handpasses were allowed while there were also instances where handpasses were blown as foul after just one or two passes.

Two Tyrone points in the montage, both from frees, come after four handpasses were played.
