Dominic Corrigan believes Declan Bonner's recent comments about Ryan McHugh being targeted by opposing teams were intended to put added pressure on referee David Gough ahead of today's Ulster SFC final.

Former Fermanagh boss Corrigan says he was 'taken aback' by the timing of the Donegal manager's claim that McHugh doesn't get enough protection from match officials.

"I was very taken aback by Declan Bonner's comments and I don't feel he has to resort to that type of stuff in the lead-up to games," Corrigan told the Irish News.

"Every referee goes out to do their best and they don't need that sort of pressure coming upon them. I really don't think there was any need for Declan to do that."

While Corrigan feels Bonner's remarks were intended to influence Gough, he doesn't think the Meath whistler to be swayed.

"I have watched David referee on a number of occasions now and he is a very strong referee and I don't think he is going to be influenced by what Declan has said," the Enniskillen-based schoolteacher asserted.
