Limerick V Meath - 22 Like(s)
It's funny how McGill wasn't really spoken about much when he was on the team; not criticised, but not praised much either. Our record with him playing (at least 8 years worth) was also decidedly mixed. Yet now that he's dropped he's apparently better than Jack Quinn, Mick Lyons and Darren Fay put together.

Change Of Management? - 21 Like(s)

Replying To seadog54:  "Chronicle and Indo run stories that Executive Committee of Meath Co Board last night voted to recommend to their delegates not to ratify Andy McEntee for a sixth year in charge. Very close vote 8 against 7 for. Now even with the support of clubs, Andys position may no longer be tenable after the withdrawal of support from the executive. Whatever the outcome it will have big impact on Meath football in coming years. https://www.independent.ie/sport/gaelic-games/gaelic-football/andy-mcentees-royal-reign-looks-set-to-end-after-board-vote-against-him-staying-on-40925786.html"
I'm surprised at that. I know our strong 2nd half vs. Dublin seems a bit less impressive after seeing Dublin subsequently perform vs. Kildare and Mayo but I'd have thought one more year would be a relatively uncontroversial choice. On the other hand there didn't seem to be much vocal support for him from the county board when he was infuriated by the Kildare game or in the Flynn U20 management fiasco, so maybe it's been a while coming.

Meath Vs Mayo - 21 Like(s)

Replying To brian:  "How many of those 4 games did we win? Talking about last weekend as a glorified challenge match but then saying we ran Dublin close in the league when it was played under the same conditions. Dublin had half a team out and played with the hand brake on. They absolutely demolished us in 20 minutes in the Leinster final. RD seriously take off the blinkers some of the times. Its ok to be critical and constructive at the same time"
I have to laugh a bit about our league game vs the Dubs last year. Everyone in the country bar Meath people saw Dublin going through the motions in an inconsequential game. Yet people here said Dublin were actually fighting for their lives and had to pull out all the stops and get a lucky goal to beat Meath. If Dublin gave their all to beat us by 4 points in October, how is it they beat us by 20 points a month later? Giving more than their all?

The Corona Virus And Possible Effects To GAA Matches - 20 Like(s)

Replying To royaldunne:  "[quote=CastleBravo:  "Hardly an impartial observer then is it? He's the person most likely to deny there were any issues. It's like saying "The USA handled the pandemic perfectly, Donald Trump told me so"."
Ok I'm not going to entertain this slandering of a man who gives his time free and has done so much for Meath gaa in coaching and every other level as a VOLUNTEER"]Just revisiting this in light of the article in the Meath Chronicle this week stating there were clearly more than the legally permitted crowd in Páirc Tailteann at the weekend, with photos and all. You can't use the excuse that the author doesn't know what PT is like either, since Jimmy Geoghegan has spent more time in PT than just about anyone alive. As for slandering your friend; you're the one who brought him in to the conversation and attached his name to a patently false claim.

Junior B - 20 Like(s)

Replying To Bear10:  "St.Pauls might get an influx of Dunboyne lads in !!! Lads who are finding it difficult to make 1st team panels you never know ???"
Dunboyne's 3rd team play at a higher level than St. Paul's. So unless there's a lot of frustrated junior Ds in Dunboyne I don't see too many transfers.

Junior B - 20 Like(s)
The new format where 1st and 2nd teams are split has nothing to do with improving the quality of games or competitions. It's been known for years that Junior clubs wanted 2nd teams out of the championship because some of them were quite good and capable of beating 1st teams. The Junior clubs naturally want to look after themselves and would like less competition, so that's why we've seen the 1st teams grouped into their own group in junior where it's tougher to progress from. This new structure is just the next step of that. It solves nothing and if anything makes the quality of junior football worse. The only reason it's even happening is because the Senior+ Intermediate championships were changing and the clubs saw their chance to latch onto this change and kick out the strong 2nd teams from Junior. Logically it makes no sense. How does taking strong 2nd teams out of Junior A, and replacing them with the 1st teams from Junior B improve the standard of Junior A? If anything it will make it worse.

Meath 2018 - 20 Like(s)
I won't claim to know who is or isn't on the panel, but find it funny when lads dismiss departures with "Well he wasn't a starter anyway so no loss". Does that mean we only need 15 players in total on our championship panel?

Super 8 Play-Off/Round 4 Qualifier - 20 Like(s)

Replying To 82300:  "anybody know if Meath play at home in P T against a qualifier. Reckon that would be a massive advantage especially against a team that have played in successive weekends. Still all to play for"
Round 4 is played in neutral venues. Though about 10 years ago Cork and Limerick agreed to toss a coin for home advantage.

Meath All-Star Nominees - 20 Like(s)
I'd be very surprised if we got an All Star. The All Ireland finalists will have 10 between them, then another 3-4 for the semi finalists/provincial winners. I don't see them giving an All Star to a team who lost every game they played against top opposition.

NFL 2020 - 20 Like(s)

Replying To Jack_Goff:  "Doesn't that 3 vs 4 home rotation only apply if you are in the same division as last year?"
I think you're right. It's mathematically impossible to have the 3/4 home/away split across all teams in all divisions. Say the 2 teams relegated from division 1 in 2019 had 3 home games in 2019, and the 2 promoted teams from division 3 had 3 home games in 2019, and also, the 4 teams in division 2 in 2019 that are remaining in division 2 in 2020 had 3 home games. Because they had 3 home games in 2019, you'd have all 8 teams in a division 2 expecting 4 home games in 2020 , which is obviously impossible. We saw this ourselves a few years ago when Meath played Monaghan away 2 years running because we both got promoted in between. That said, if we "take" Cavans place in Division 1 (assuming 2nd in D2 replaces 8th in D1, and 1st in D2 replaces 7th in D1) I think we'll get 4 home games, as Cavan only had 3 home games this year.

Minor Football Championship - 20 Like(s)
Am I right in saying the St. Ultan's/Cortown Gaels/Round Towers is 4 clubs in one team? How can they not assemble 15 players between the 4 of them to field? They've no adult football to play, it's during the school/college year so holidays aren't an issue, I doubt any 15 to 17 year olds have unavoidable work commitments...

Qualifiers - 20 Like(s)
Bar a league draw in 2011, we've lost every game we've played against Tyrone since 2007. This included a fallow period for them early last decade when Tyrone couldn't so much as reach an Ulster final, and even the qualifiers became difficult for them. Yet now that Tyrone are All Ireland Champions, people reckon it's a 50/50 game? Ye are on a different planet altogether.

Pairc Tailteann - 19 Like(s)
People might blame the PR but the draws have been plugged everywhere for the last 2 years. I was getting sick of it. It was advertised in Meath, Leinster and AI match programmes, pitch advertising hoardings, the Páirc Tailteann scoreboard, half time draws, PA announcements at games, it's been front of the Meath GAA website, on the chronicle, regularly posted about on their instagram and twitter pages etc. If you looked at anything involved with Meath GAA you saw ads for the draws. You can lead a horse to water....

Moving On! - 19 Like(s)

Replying To Jinxie:  "Are you sure? I thought getting to a provincial final, irregardless of league standing, put you in all ireland qualifying round, and likewise, finish 1 or 2 in div 3 put you in all irrland, no matter where you got knocked out of your provincial competition. That was my understanding of it"
No, topping division 3 doesn't guarantee anything. Sam Maguire will consist of 8 provincial finalists + the next 7 by league standings + Westmeath. If Cavan win the division 3 final, they'll be 15th by league rankings (Div. 3 winners are counted as though they came 7th in Div 2.) The only way 15th gets into Sam is if nobody from Div. 3 or 4 reaches a provincial final. In most years this would be a likely enough bet, but the Connacht draw this year ensures one of London, Leitrim or Sligo will be in the Connacht final, and in Sam Maguire. This means that even if the remaining 7 provincial finalists were from Div. 1 and 2, the lowest team who'd qualify for Sam Maguire is 14th in the league, so 6th in Div. 2.

Meath V Tyrone - 19 Like(s)
I think some lads need to get their story straight. There's nothing wrong with blind love for Meath and always believing in the team to win before every game they play. What's a bit annoying is posters spending the whole winter saying Meath are "back where they belong" and that we'll be shaking up a few trees and will beat Tyrone and Mayo etc. but then once we lose playing the "Sure we never stood a chance and did well to get within 6 points of a division one team" card. It's not like Tyrone are anything special. We've played them 6 or 7 times in the last few years and aside from a tanking under Banty (?) there's rarely been more than a score in it.

New Meath Jersey - 19 Like(s)

Replying To bert09:  "No idea. Heard a new one was coming out with more of the old classic box design. Current jersey still at full price so maybe it'll be new year?"
Must be a rule that every 3rd or 4th Meath jersey has to incorporate some form of the old box design. The 2004-ish jersey had the boxes on the sides, and our 2013 one had a checkered pattern but without the yellow lines.

Where Are We At - 19 Like(s)

Replying To FoolsGold:  "Most LOI games are friday nights so he wouldn't be able to give any commitment to a Meath training, Unless the Wexford and Meath managment made some agreement that he could do a session with each team in a week."
I'm just trying to imagine; say all goes well with the vaccines, case numbers etc. and in the summer Meath are playing a Leinster SF on a Saturday evening. Would McEntee really let his goalkeeper miss training the week before, and then play a full soccer match 24 hours before the game?

All Ireland - Leinster Championship Draw 2020 - 19 Like(s)
They've changed the format for 2020. The semi final draw isn't till after the quarter finals, so we could get Dublin or Kildare in the semi final should we get there.

Meath Vs Galway - 19 Like(s)

Replying To brian:  "Blindly optimistic here but i think we could turnover Galway as they've never done well in Navan. The lads have been close in recent games, and we'll have to win one of these soon, so why not this one. Our record v the top teams has been awful but surely we have to win one of them soon."
I wouldn't be so sure we're guaranteed a win. And don't call me Shirley.
