Postponement Of Games

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Do people think more time should possibly be given if games are going to be called off? I know it's difficult to make these calls as pitches can improve over short periods. With all the rain there has been over the last few weeks and more forecast over coming days surely the first round of the league this weekend will be called off and should be called off in advance as opposed to an hour or two before throw in so clubs and players can make arrangements?

The other side to this is the chaos that will follow with the planner if all games are off or if half the games go ahead. Just wondering peoples thoughts.

Yeah but it's a no win situation really. If they did call the games off earlier and the weather improved you would have people on complaining that their pitch was in perfect condition for a game and that it shouldn't have been called off so early. To be fair to the CB or whoever makes those calls they are dammed if they do and dammed if they don't in this case.

Would it not make more sense for the county board to invest in all weather pitches. If there is adverse weather forecast then move the matches to these pitches so fixtures are not held up.
If a fixture cant go ahead on a sat or Sunday maybe try playing it under lights on a Monday or Tuesday to keep things moving along especially at this time of the year.

Is the all weather pitch in dunganny usable

Who will fund the money to build all these all weather pitches, and for the sake of two rounds of the league.
Games will go ahead bar the ones on the few very soggy pitches, most pitches will be fine.

Have you any idea how much an full size All weather pitch costs? And you are suggesting the CB invest in a few of them. Not a realistic option I'm afraid.

I do have sympathy for fixture planners here. You can't win no matter what you do.

Look at the comments under any article that declares a game to be off; it'll be full of people giving out saying the weather is fine and the notice was too late and the GAA are a disgrace.

Then look at the comments under any article that declares a game to be on; it'll be full of people giving out "think of the supporters/players/children!", that there's a hurricane out there and they've called it too early and the GAA are a disgrace.

How can you say chaos would follow as there are many weeks in June, July and August with few, or no games. What is the rush to start competitions in January? Playing games in mud pitches is un-necessary, does little to improve football, or hurling and cost all clubs substantial amounts repairing their pitches-makes little sense. It appears that club games is more about getting competitions finished irrespective of conditions.

Calm down its only suggestion. When will the games that were called off be played.
On another note why cant the all weather pitch in dunganny be used as I assume its full size. Its sitting there 7 days a week with lights. Why could the cancelled fixtures last weekend be played during this week.

Given the expected weather I assume more postponements are imminent. Not even march and fixtures planner goosed. Lads can kiss goodbye going anywhere on paddys day or at Easter.

All Saturday games called off 2 hours before throw in! Surely this could have been done days ago. Everybody knew midweek it was going to be a terrible weekend

Nom vs Colmcilles minor match was abandoned at half time. The referee only got notification about the games being called off after throw in. During ht he obviously saw his phone and duly called it off.
This is really not good enough from the county board. Completely unfair on the players, mentors and parents.

We got the email at 13.20, 10 mins before we were due to leave. Really not good enough from the county board. Only for we were tying to contact them all morning, they would have let the games go ahead.

That is a fact as thats the time it came up on official Meath Gaa app, like another poster said i was at another match where the referee was informed with the second half underway that all games were off. Maybe an email was sent to club Secretary's a bit earlier but not the point. Everyone was aware of warnings for weekend.

It may have come through on the App then but the email landed in my inbox a few minutes after 1.

The games being referred to here started at 1, no excuse for that. Even a couple of hours notice is not good enough. Everyone knew what was coming
