It may be 36 years ago but many of Tyrone’s older generation will remember it like it was yesterday.

On this day in 1984, the mighty Frank McGuigan led the Red Hands to their sixth Ulster senior football championship title with a remarkable 0-11 haul against neighbours Armagh.

The Ardboe man had famously starred at centre-field in the 1972 Ulster minor final before coming on as a second-half substitute an hour or so later for the seniors in Clones where they fell to Donegal.

The following year McGuigan was at the forefront as Tyrone conquered Down to claim their first provincial title in 16 long years, but it was in ’84 that one of the game’s greats gave his finest performance for the O’Neill County.

Having returned from the United States the previous year, McGuigan was straight back into the Tyrone team and would produce a tour de force performance against Armagh on the big occasion, outscoring the Orchard men himself in a 0-15 to 1-7 victory.

The same year would see the then 29-year-old earn his All Star award and finished third top scorer in the All-Ireland championship with 0-23 behind Dublin’s Barney Rock and Matt Connor of Offaly.
