Trim full back Luke Moran

Trim 2-15 Walterstown 0-9

Yesterday evening the Trim Intermediate footballers traveled to Dunshaughlin to play Walterstown in round two of the championship. Walterstown had beaten Trim in the league just six weeks ago by nine points and the team had also suffered defeat  in the first round of the championship loosing to Ballinabrackey in Clonard on a wet and windy evening just twelve days ago.

Brendan Murphy and his management team  had to pick the boys up get them motivated and ready to go for this second round match because to loose again would all but end the teams chances of making the knock out stages of the championship. Another championship defeat would leave it a very long summer for the team and management. A positive recurring feature during games in all but the Walterstown league match was that this young Trim team always kept battling even when things were going against them in games a great sign in any team. The feeling in the camp was if Trim got an lead early on and did not concede early goals that the team could do a lot of damage . Well last night on a beautiful evening in Dunshaughlin the Trim team got what the wanted , a fast surface , a dry ball and a great start.

Cieran Joyce provide the great start , from the throw in Frankie Murphy tipped down to Alan Douglas , Dougie hit a long ball into Joyce at the edge of the square which the full back missed judged , Joyce followed up to tap the ball into the net . Ten seconds gone Trim were a goal up . From the kick out Frankie Murphy fielded the ball high in the air , passed to Joe Murphy, Joe flicked it on to Darie Lynch who chipped a lovely pass into Cieran Joyce who took the ball at full speed beat the full back and was bearing down on goal with only the Walterstown keeper to beat , just eight yards out , he had to score , he takes a lovely shot wide of the  keeper , the keeper is beaten but unfortunately  the ball clipped the outside of the post and wide. Trim we're flying and in the next fifteen minutes should have struck the back of the net  at lest four more times. In this time Aaron Lynch hit the bar with the keeper beaten and also had another goal attempt saved. Brian Dowling hit the post and had another goal attempt blocked by the Walterstown corner back. The Trim Forwards had the Walterstown backs run ragged. The youthful exuberance of Brian Dowling, Aaron and Darie Lynch was a joy to watch in the opening half . Cieran Joyce at number eleven was orchestrating every attack like Trevor Giles in his hay day. Joe O Donohue and James Cullen were the hard working link men in this pulsating first half performance from the team in Red and White.

After Trim's blistering start from Joycie's  goal and a few near goal chances missed Cieran Joyce got on the score board again to put Trim a goal and a point to no score after seven minutes. Walterstown then got in action and registered two fine score from play in the eight and tenth minutes. The teams were evenly match during the middle ten minutes of the match and traded some great points from play during this time. Aaron Lynch was causing all sorts of problems for the Walterstown defense and he scored four great points in the first half from play and placed balls. Darie Lynch and James Cullen closed the scoring for Trim in what turned out to be a brilliant first half performance from the Town team.

Half Time Score : Trim 1-8 Walterstown 0-5

Former Trim manager  Owen Carroll who is now looking after his home club Walterstown had a lot of sole searching to do at half time and to his credit he reorganized his team to good affect as his team scored the first two points of the second half to leave just four points between the teams. James Cullen who was having his best match in a long time for Trim got his side off the mark in the thirty seventh minute with a right footed kick from about thirty yards. If James can get a run of games and stay injury free he can become on of Trims most influential players for the remainder of the season. Walterstown got the next point from play with twenty minutes remaining and now their were only four points between the sides. Walterstown were playing a lot better now and must have felt they had a real chance to get something out of the game.  Then they were hit by a red and white tidal wave, Trim scored one goal and three points in the next five minutes to put the match to bed. Owen McGrath was introduced for the injured Frankie Murphy with just ten minutes played in the second half. Owens introduction was the changing of the game for Trim because in the next ten minutes he had an unbelievable impact on this game. He scored two point from play, missed a goal chance and gave the final pass to Brian Dowling to score a goal in a brilliant Trim move that swept up the length of the field. McGrath then got a black card and was back on the bench just ten minutes after been introduced. .McGrath's black card was warranted as he pulled a Walterstown player to the ground and all in attendance knew he was getting Black from the time referee Seamus Carroll blew his whistle, the shrill and force of the whistle told the story.  As McGrath walked to the bench the large Trim crowd in attendance in Dunshaughlin said  "job well done Owen". Back Brian Dowling's goal, he received the pass off the  shoulder from McGrath, he beat his marker with his trade mark shimmy and slotted the ball wide of the keeper for a brilliantly take goal by the youngster. Dowling just nineteen years old took the goal with the coolness, calmness and confidence of a far more experienced player, One could say in all aspects of life Beano has an Old Head On Young Shoulders !

Trim Now had a ten point lead with just ten minutes to play. Walterstown never gave up and tried to get a goal that might give them some hope but the Trim defense was having none of it. Barry Callaghan once again had a fine match between the sticks and made one very good save with six minutes to go. Walterstown got a point in the last ten minutes but Trim Added points, One from Mikey Cullen and two from top scorer Aaron Lynch to finish out the game with ease to win by eleven points on the night.

This was a great win for Brendan Murphy and his team and you could see and sense the relief from the players, management and the Trim supporters after the match. Murphy will be very pleased with the impact he had from the bench last night, Owen McGrath was brilliant in the ten minutes he lasted on the pitch, Mikey Cullen scored one great point and gave his marker a torrid time after he was introduced for McGrath. This win now puts Trim right back in the melting pot and will gives great hope for all involved with the team. The next few months training and waiting on the next round of the championship will be a lot more enjoyable after this victory.
