Donoghue lashes out at GAA

Last weekend's fixtures fiasco caused a lot of disruption to a number of county teams including All-Ireland champions Galway.

The Tribesmen were due to play Wexford at Innovate Wexford Park last Sunday afternoon. But, unforeseen overnight snow resulted in the pitch being unplayable.

A pitch inspection was called for 5pm that evening to see if the game could go ahead at the same venue on Bank Holiday Monday, while all the time the Galway squad and management had been waiting patiently in the team hotel at Mount Wolseley, Carlow. When word finally came through to the Galway squad that the game would not be played the following day, it was 7pm.

Galway manager Michéal Donoghue told the Connacht Tribune that the whole affair was handled very badly and even the suggestion of playing on Bank Holiday Monday was disrespectful to the players.

"We knew we were in trouble when we saw the lying snow and it turned out to be a terrible long day. It was only at 7pm that we finally knew the match was gone," said Donoghue. "We had players who had work commitments and other plans for the Bank Holiday Monday."

Donoghue is keen to move on and focus on the refixture this weekend and he is looking forward to seeing his players get a run out at Innovate Wexford Park, where they will take on Wexford in the Leinster SHC also.

"There's still a game to be played and none of our players have experience of playing there. It will be good to get a run out at the venue and to test the atmosphere, especially as we have to travel again to play them in the championship."
