Leitrim v Roscommon May 22nd - 3 Like(s)

Replying To Frawnci3:  "This cant go on. 2 tier championship has to be considered in some form. Jim McGuinness' proposal was the best recommended so far. The reward to effort ratio is out of whack."
Another humiliating defeat and yet again nothing will change. Leitrim will prepare for the back door, hope for a good draw and we will be out of the championship after the next game regardless of the draw as we are the worst team in Ireland, lets not deny this. Our forwards lack quality, even the once classy Mulligan has gone past his best. Our midfield is non existent, a complete change is needed here. Our defence, bar one or two players are very poor, cant tackle and give away way to many frees. To finish a game with 12 men though is a new low. What kind of discipline do these guys think they have? Train since October to come on and take a man out of it and get a straight red is a disgrace and two black cards along with that. To me it cries out that they have been poorly coached and they are only there making up numbers. Where do we go from here, well my honest opinion is we no longer compete at senior level until a B championship is set up. The All Ireland series is the most dated, predictable championship in world sport. Its only the All Ireland Semi Finals that you can watch a game where you wont know the outcome beforehand. I know Reynolds has said last week he has no interest in playing a B championship and Conlon said it last year but how will we ever progress playing Division 1 teams when we are bottom end of Division 4. We need more championship games against teams of our own level. The most embarrassing thing of all is that Rossies didn't even come out of second gear and they still hammered us, Imagine if they actually tried.

Replying To Leitrim1234:  "Halfway through our main competition. Here is my take so far: Even though we have been in the position to get promoted before we have never felt fully comfortable with the pressure. This year feels different. I genuinely feel we haven't had a full 70 minutes performance yet which is exciting. We have Limerick away, London at home, Derry away and Waterford at home to finish the campaign. Two wins and we should be safely through with a game in Croke Park to look forward to. We are playing a pragmatic style of football. It couldn't not be said that it is overly defensive or overly offensive. We're also starting to see our squad take shape now with players returning from injuries or extended breaks. Competition is probably at the highest rate it's ever been on a Leitrim panel and that's without Donal Wrynn, Keith Beirne and James Mitchell three players we all would have thought would have been on the panel this year but for various reasons are not. After Darragh Rooney's performance the last day I would assume the management have to start him from now on. An attack based on a triangle of Rooney, Heslin and O'Rourke should be able to cause sufficient problems. Personally I would be adding Gary Plunkett to the other 3. Our sweeper system with Sean McWeeney at its fulcrum has largely worked with a bit of confusion at times. I would worry that once the ground hardens that he might be caught for pace and that we might be better with Shane Quinn as the sweeper at wing forward and Oisin Madden at Wing back? He was brilliant here last year. I know he is our best man marker and consistent player but could Paddy be an option at 6 if Fergal McTague performs well in the full back line after his injury? It would release Mark Plunkett and Maguire is brilliant at coming out of defence with the ball? One of Two big decisions that Terry Hyland made was playing Mark Plunkett at centre back. This has been a success. He is a leader, an imposing presence and his ability to use long range foot passing has been an added string to our bow. The only nagging feeling I have is that we would be an even better team if he was at 11? Gary Reynolds could be a solution but I'm not sure he has the pace? The second decision Terry made was Dean McGovern at 14. It worked brilliantly against Mayo but hasn't really clicked since. I think I would persist with it but when you're leaving quality such as Gary Plunkett, Rooney, Mulligan and McGloin on the bench to play McGovern in a position he is not used to it becomes harder to sell especially when Dean can definitely play at Wing forward or midfield. Next goal is to gain promotion as quickly as possible. Win the next two games and then we can start experimenting with a few players who are close to the starting line-up. In the long run this would give us an added boost before the championship were I expect us to be much more competitive."
Surely it would make more sense to play mc tague full back and paddy on the corner and drop flynn as he is not a natural corner back or man marker. I think he has a role to come of the bench for mc weeney possibly. Rooney has to start and I would like to see the bench used earlier as we run a lot so from 40 minutes we should introduce the bench. I think wicklow could be our biggest threat to second place assuming we don't top the table.

Looking back over the season you would have to say we rode our luck a lot over the league to gain promotion and in fairness most teams who win need luck but the wheels really came off the wagon since our game in Croker. Players leaving the panel, lads on the beer and training seemed to go out the window. I think a lot comes down to the joke that is the championship set up and the fact it's the most outdated championship in world sport and it must be demotivating for lads training to play roscommon, mayo and galway in order to win a connaught championship. We are probably 10 years off competing with those 3 teams and that's if they freeze in time and we make massive strides in strength and conditioning and underage coaching. I would have to question Terrys management style and in particular how he deals with lads one to one.. surely out of those 8 players that walked away could have been kept in board had there been more communication and better player management relationships. It will be interesting to see if Terry stays around for next season.

Well what is there left to say? The dummy team they named definatly worked! Shocking performance and result and at the end of the day we are as low as we ever have been. Listening to the commentary on the wireless James Glancy thinks progress has been made and Ward should be kept on, how on earth can he say that. The other commentator said he has been watching Leitrim play for many many years and we always had fight and were hard beaten, but he didn't see any fight in this team. He did say we may have more talent but now hunger or fight. As for talent, well I don't know what to say about that, to be hammered by Sligo today I don't think there were any positives. I honestly think we would benefit from playing in the Junior championship as we would get more game time and possibly win something. What is the point going on the way we are? We were hammered by two Connaught teams in the championship this year so we will never win Connaught, and as for the back door well 2 wins in 15 years is it? well that says enough. People are always quick to say on here we need a big support out or there should have been more supporters there, tell me why you would go to watch your county being humiliated year in, year out. Our Minors, which was our last hope in Leitrim football got hammered by mayo last week. I have lost all hope and faith in the current set up and structure of the GAA in Leitrim & in Ireland. It is the most predictable, boring and out dated championship in world sport and it will never change because our players that took to the field and got hammered get insulted when a B championship is suggested! Laughable

Yes Spodo the 4 players you mentioned are a loss to Leitrim club football and there will be a few J1s leaving throughout the county that will further lower the standard. Just reflecting on the game I saw a picture on this website of the Roscommon Management and then below it a picture of the Leitrim Management and it made me think of the difference of calibre of management set ups. Rossies have Mc Hale, O Donnell & Kevin Mc Stay, 3 lads that have achieved a lot in GAA and they would be allowed manage any team in the country (except Mayo it seems) then we have Shane Ward & Drummond, Shane seemingly got the job on the back of winning an under 21 game and I don't know what Drummond has achieved in the game. Im not trying to be disrespectful but that's a huge difference in managerial quality alone

Cant believe Gary Reynolds interview in the paper this week, how you can defend the management is beyond me. Also a lot of talk about the so called talent we have in the current squad, where is it? I haven't seen it in any games this year. Maybe its evident at training against themselves but when we come up against other teams our talent looks very ordinary

Replying To leitrim4sam:  "I wouldn't blame management. Look IMO our players seem great and we see them in the Leitrim club championship and they are great in that, but outside of that they are average. Our defenders are deplorable- one thing Leitrim had when I was younger was great defenders McGuinness, McKeoen, Reynolds, Quinn, Regan, Foley etc.. the defenders available now are of such a low standard. Our midfield is average - Carroll and McCloskey would dominate them back in their day. Our forwards are are good and are our best line by far. But Keith was banging over 9 or 10 points a game in the last few years now this is gone. He was our one top top class player and he is gone and the others cannot replicate what he done. If Keith was there we may well be in the promotion mix- but he is not. Every other inter county manager has a range of players to pick from and then mould ,that are capable of playing at a high standard. Andy has players to pick from that are such a low standard. I honestly think that Jim Gavin in his pomp couldn't do better with our players. Look if Andy was managing Mayo he'd be motoring fine. When was the last time a Leitrim team won a game in the Connacht club champ or reached a final in any grade? Have we ever won a title at any grade of club championship? I'll save you looking - no- and we are the only county never to have won one. Roscommon won senior and intermediate last year- what division do they play in? Mayo won junior - what division do they play in? The standard of player available to the inter county manager is good in Leitrim club levels- but doesn't hold up once it's exposed outside of that"
I agree with some of your points, our defenders are very poor and mc closkey and carrol aka the twin towers would eat our current midfield for breakfast but I disagree with you letting the management off so easy. Look at the difference in Donegal this year from last year more or less the same players with a different manager. Our players are good enough to get promoted under a good manager, hyland achieved it and I think terry hyland would have got this current team up this season. Keith is a loss but not as much as some people say on here, yes he got a lot of scores every game but most were frees. We also have a loosing culture that's bred into us, players and supporters, we just accept defeat, go out on the pitch and say hard luck lads maybe next time... we need to expect better, demand better and when they are playing sh1t let them know it!!

I feel for Mc Kiernan but I can see Mc Crann is more vocal and confident in goals and they both have pulled of some serious saves. Not surprised about Dolan he hasn't impressed me in any of the last few games and he had an absolute howler against Antrim. He will be a great impact sub if we are being out fielded in the middle. I hope the forwards start as named very strong balanced mix in there although I would swap Plunkett for Evan Sweeney. I don't think Sean Mc Weeney will start wing back as he hasn't the pace and he is going to be our sweeper so expect a few changes to the team that's named.

Great atmosphere today and great to get the win. However I think today really showed us we have yet to get our best 15 playing yet. A lot of mistakes made today and we were very lucky at times I thought Rooney was great when he came on, scored 3 from play so should get the nod to start v limerick in my opinion. I can't understand why we hold the ball so much and slow play down out the middle of the field when we have quality fast forwards inside, there was times Ryan was left in one on one yet we don't kick ball in fast also the odd high ball in is no harm too especially when we have big men in the forwards. The only criticism I have of the management is we are very slow to use the bench and we have the quality on the bench so not sure why that is.anyway another great win and another big game in two weeks. We need to beat limerick now as wexford have lost two that rules them out it's between us Derry limericks and wicklow for the top two places

If I'd say fhe master fixtures will be published around April or May as usual a few months late. Let's face it nothing will change again this year we will still be playing league games in November and December, there will be massive gaps between club league game's, the shield will be as meaningless as always, leitrim will not get promoted or Win a connaught championship game so really this year will take the same frustrating course as the last many years have. Jesus it's depressing when ya think about it

Square B you are a great example of the typical poor attitude. You want change but when changes are proposed you jump up and down complaining about suggestions and shooting good ideas down. You say the players don't want a B championship, but ow do you know? you have heard the opinions of two or three players who consider themselves celebs on social media before big games. what about the other 25 or so players on the panel and the other club lads that wont commit as they don't want to train all year to be humiliated. Heres a question for you all. If you were a good club player in Leitrim and had potential to play county why would you train from October to june most nights of the week travelling up and down the county and sacrificing your social and family life to eventually get hammered by a division 1 team in the championship. A few euros travel expense money and a hot meal after training isn't worth the effort. If lads were playing in a championship where lets say we have a group with Clare, Wexford and Antrim and the top two teams go through then lads would get at least 3 championship games, all winnable and the prospect winning something and having a sense of pride in our county team.

Devastating for Mayo yet again the whole country bar the dubs wanted them to win and it will be a shame if this group doesnt go on to win an all ireland. Its hard to see them return next year but then again i said that last year. Andy Moran was phononimal this year as was colm boyle but for me Lee Keegan was immence... and its dissapointing to see he wasnt even mentioned on tbe sunday game team of the year. He dragged them through the roscommon game, scored a class goal in the final and absolutley roasted Ciaran Kilkenny, he beats his man every game and also takes some great scores. A fantastic talent an a great team and i hope this group wins the all ireland they deserve. Keep the heads up!! MayoAbu

Well that was embarrassing... I hope nobody thinks any progress has been made because we lost by less as the rossies never had to break a sweat, they were never going to loose that game. What kind of tactic is playing Wrynn Full Forward and lumping ball in high, he has had a bay year in general anyway. Like the one highlight from last years mauling in the Hyde was Rooney cutting the Roscommon defence open and burying a goal, then he, O' Rourke & Moran are subbed for this game?? Like if you want to try be competitive play the best 15 and try get to half time still in the game, then the pressure mounts on the favourites, the adrenalin is high on the underdogs and that's when the supporters can smell blood and big results happen. Would Carlow have played Kildare with 3 of their better players on the bench in the hope that they get to 45 minutes still in the game and bring on good players? its just embarrassing and don't be fooled there has been no progress.. I do think we have a good enough panel of 25 players at the right age if coached well and inspired by a big name manager that we could come out of division 4 and at least play better football but there is about 10 players on the current panel that are not near standard and we need to start training twice as much as we are now.. currently we are on club level.

Yes I agree with previous poster, Saturday was a great day out and hopefully we won't wait as long again to be back in Croke Pairc. I don't think we started with our best 15 on the field I think Mc Govern is a mid fielder and when you have him and Flynn in the forward line you lack pace and scoring threat. I think Rooney should have started in the half forward line instead and switched in and out. We were the underdogs and when you're up against it you must take your chances, the 8/9 wides in the first half were the looking of the game however the 4 frees we kicked wide should be blamed also. At this level you have to kick your frees and Flynn and O Rourke kicked two each wide and that needs to be addrrssed especially when we have an experienced free taker in mulligan on the field. I do think this team has great potential though, besides Shane Moran they all need to significantly improve their physique. It was like men against boys at times and Derry walked through us to easy. Also we need to manage the game better, foul in the right areas slow the opposition momentum etc.. but this experience should stand to the lads. Few weeks hard training now and give roscommon a good rattle then realistically let's hole for a few favourable draws in the back door. Hopefully the club scene unear this a few more players t o strengthen the panell and then pre season needs to commence early in preparation for div 3 because if we do a Carlos and come straight down it will be a disaster

Replying To 1969LEITRIM:  "Will we able for Roscommon in The Hyde in May?"
Considering how close they ran the Dubs yesterday and they have tightened u p the defence further I'd sa yg we won't come within ten points but who cares the league final is now our Championship. The pressure is off and hopefully now lads can get game time to be in contention for the final. I don't think we have had our best 15 playing yet and it's clear if we play like we did yesterday Derry will tear us apart. I know the weigh tg of expectation was on us the big crowd and RTE in town but yesterday at times we were terrible. Defensively looked ok but transitioning into stack we are poor and our kick passing inside is very poor like a good play maker on the half forward line will bring the inside forwards into the game a lot more. Again I don't think the sweeper is working as it should maybe it's a lack of pace but I think he should be the link from defence into attack but from what I have seen he doesn't do this. The Derry game should be a good opportunity to give Cullen, Mulligan, Mc Gloin, Mc Crann, and hopefully a few injured lads returning some game time. We are up now anyway so well done lads it's great to come on here and highlight areas we could improve going forward rather than the doom and gloom that has been about the last 10 years. There was a great crowd in Carrick yesterday I expect us to fill Croker in a few weeks time

Replying To leitrimabu1:  "You are not seriously suggesting Ryan shouldn't start! Few defences will handle him and we are blessed with talented forwards so it will be Wicklow's problem figuring out how to deal with us. Jack Heslin was another unsung hero from the Wexford game - a perfect partner for Ryan up front.Hopefully Emlyn will be in Aughrim although he is only resuming training in the last two weeks. Evan Sweeney will be another option if he has recovered from a hamstring problem. If we perform with the same level of intensity and belief shown over the last 2 games we will win. Let's hope the weather doesn' t stop it."
No I am not suggesting that at all maybe you should 're read the post. I believe he will get better playing with more skilful forwards. There were a few lads starting in the forward line the last day that I feel may be dropped in the next game or so.

Leitrim v Carlow qualifier - 1 Like(s)
We have reached a new low in Leitrim Football. Hammered yesterday by a poor Carlow team is an absolute disgrace. We need a complete clear out, County board, Management all have to go. We are now the worst team in Ireland by far. Questions have to be asked of thi management team, who are they? WHat has Brendan Guckian achieved as a Manager and what has John O Mahony brought to the set up . Looking at the decisions they have made over the last two games they havent a clue. We are very unfit we have no defence and its like men against boys every team we come up against.

The county board also have a lot of responsibility to take, they always go for the cheap option when appointing a Manager, Shane Ward was given the job after winning one U21 Match, Brendan Guckian got the job after achieving what excatly?? PJ Leddy said yesterday that we have to restructure the championship after yesterdays result, what difference will that make to Leitrim, unless they set up a C championship for Leitrim, London and New York we havent a hope of ever competing in any championship.
Gutted for anyone who travelled to yesterdays game, they should be reimbursed after what they had to witness. Leitrim players need to start acting like Inter county footballers too, Lads drinking a week before games is just disgraceful, just because you have a Joey Essex haircut and a county tracksuit doesnt make you a county footballer. WE SHOULD BE TRAINING 7 NIGHTS A WEEK, GYM SESSIONS, FOOD PROGRAMMES, PROTEIN.....
MANAGEMENT DO US ALL A FAVOUR AND STEP DOWN

I cannot understand Gary Reynolds "we all eat the same spuds" interview. What is he talking about? Just last week he said he has no interest playing a B championship as they would never get to play their neighbours like Roscommon, yet after the hammering Sunday he is saying that we will never progress as a county without more games. Does he expect us to progress even though we loose? Yeah he says that Tyrone or Dublin have played 5 or 6 games a year but that because they keep winning their games. What about the likes of Longford or Carlow that loose their two games every year too they are in the same position as us, he should no be comparing us to Tyrone or Dublin. Its quite simple, restructure the championship to two tiers, with group stages with round robbing to increase championship games. Leitrim, along with the other poorer counties need to accept that they are wasting their time and money fielding teams in the current set up. ITS TIME FOR CHANGE

I agree with some previous posters the goalie situ needs to be sorted, we see how important gaining possession is from your own kick outs it gives you such a foothold in the game. Patton for Donegal has been class cluxton and comeford both class and Morgan for Tyrone. There has to be a new young keeper in mayo to develop. No doubt there will be a few retirements but I hope not to many, for me Colm Boyle is top class yes he may not have the legs he once had but so experienced and plays the sweeper role as good as anyone. Keegan, Durcan, A O Shea and COC still have a few years in them and you need the blend of youth and experience so there is fresh blood needed. It amazes me that there is no top class young forwards breaking through but hopefully there will be next year. The Dubs still have a place for cluxton, brogan, MD Mcauley and they are getting on in years too but you need the mix. Mayo must win connaught next year because the road taken this year is too much for any team, 7 games in 8 weeks is disgraceful and would have had some impact last weekend. They have been very close to beating this Dublin team a few times and I do think they can Win an all ireland but the dubs need to be beaten first and I think Kerry might just do it this year. On the bright side Mayo give so much to the GAA and the neutral supporter and we need a team like them otherwise it would be dead on its feet, also you could be from leitrim like me, the spice girls have played more in croke park this year than we have the last 10 years sad but true.
