Speculation is increasing that former Westmeath manager Michael Ryan is the front runner to be the new Laois senior hurling manager.

Ryan stepped down from the Westmeath job following their defeat to Wexford in the All-Ireland SHC preliminary quarterfinal.

The Waterford native was four years in charge of the Lake County and won a NHL title with the side. This year saw his charges lose both the NHL 2A final and the inaugural Joe McDonagh Cup final to Carlow.

Former Waterford boss Ryan was at the helm for some remarkable performances in recent years, such as the loss to reigning All-Ireland champions Tipperary in last year's qualifiers, pushing the Premier to the pin of their collar.

Laois are on the look out for a new manager since Eamonn Kelly stepped down from the position after the O'Moore County narrowly avoided being relegated to the Christy Ring Cup for 2019.

They have been in the process of appointing a new manager since then and it is reported that Ryan is top of their wish list.
