Mayo's Tom Parsons receives medical treatment

The horror knee injury suffered by Tom Parsons during Mayo's Connacht SFC quarter-final defeat to Galway eight days ago has been described as "one of the most unusual and rare injuries in sport".

The midfielder, who dislocated his knee and suffered bad ligament damage, underwent the first of what is expected to be a number of surgeries on Saturday.

"The operation in the early hours of Saturday morning took place at the Sports Surgery Clinic. It was just the first operation on the ligaments alone," sports broadcaster Darren Frehill revealed on RTÉ Radio One's Morning Ireland programme.

Frehill went on to say how grateful Parsons was for all the support and well wishes he has received.

"He just wanted to thank all his management and his team-mates in Mayo for their support, they visit him regularly and all the best wishes he's got from the wider GAA community.

"He's been inundated with messages of support, he knows he has a long road ahead but he has reiterated his desire to get back in the green and red of Mayo."
