Michael Fennelly’s body is holding up well to the demands of club hurling.

Eight All-Ireland medals in his pocket, the injury-ravaged 2011 Hurler of the Year retired from intercounty duty last winter but is still going strong at club level with Ballyhale Shamrocks, whom he helped guide to the Leinster Club SHC final on Sunday:

“It's not as hard on the body and the body is surviving,” the 33-year-old told The Irish Independent. “Normally I'd come back from Kilkenny and I'd have a couple of things wrong with me but thankfully I'm getting a bit of a run now with the lads to try and avoid injury.

“I cannot pick and choose sessions, but I manage it better. Henry [Shefflin, manager] knows me very well in terms of what I can't do as well and things are good, it's been genuinely great to be back with the club.”
