Wicklow referee shortage reaches crisis point

There are a shortage of referees in Wicklow

Wicklow GAA have issued an appeal for clubs to put forward new referees for the coming year.

There is a massive shortage of referees in the county and a number of issues arose during the year because of this.

Now, Wicklow GAA have urged clubs or club members to get involved in officiating at games. In recent years, a few referees have been added, but not enough to cover the amount of games at all levels.

Wicklow Games Manager Hugh Kenny said: “We have 37 clubs in the county. If every club contributed one new referee that would make 37 new referees which would be a major help to our games.

“With the increase in the number of games played in 2019 and again in 2020 we will need more referees in place. Wouldn’t it be very irresponsible of our GAA clubs if we had to call off games because we have no referees. This is not a county board issue we simply need more referees to run our games programme.”
