President Michael D. Higgins was amongst the 27,000 strong crowd that supported last night’s Sean Cox fundraiser at the Aviva Stadium.

Liverpool great Kenny Dalglish managed a star studded Liverpool legends team against a Mick McCarthy managed Ireland XI and Sean Cox was there himself to witness a 2-1 win for the Reds.

The event was organised to raise money for the former St Peter’s, Dunboyne GAA chairman who was the victim of a brutal attack outside Anfield before Liverpool's Champions League semi-final against AS Roma last April.

Keith Andrews opened the scoring for the team in green but his strike was cancelled out by John Aldridge (penalty) and Vladimir Smicer.

“The crowd didn't let us down, the Irish people didn't let us down,” Liverpool and Ireland legend Jason McAteer told RTE Sport afterwards.

“I got to see Sean before the game and it broke my heart. It could have happened to anyone, any one of us. It's like sliding doors isn't it? A minute later, ten minutes before. It doesn't stop here though. It's ongoing. Sean's recovery is something we'll always watch closely.”
