Mattie McGleenan has hinted that Cavan will appeal the red cards issued to Conor Moynagh and Dara McVeety at the end of their All-Ireland SF qualifier win over Down.

Referee Cormac Reilly sent off the Cavan duo along with Down's Anthony Doherty after a melee broke out after the final whistle. It means Moynagh and McVeety will miss next Saturday's third round qualifier against Tyrone unless they can prove their innocence in the meantime.

"I don't know what happened, I was looking at the other end of the field and really delighted that we managed to win the football match," the Cavan manager said.

"I am very disappointed that the referee has seen fit to give red cards to two of our best players and we will look at the video and see where it takes us.

"But if it's the case that we don't have the two boys next week, then someone else has to stand up and wear the jersey."

Reflecting on what was a hard-fought battle at Brewster Park, McGleenan admitted that Cavan were lucky to get the win.

"It was an Ulster championship match, Down played serious football and we probably stole it. We didn't play anywhere near what we're capable of and we're just happy to still be in the hat," he added.
