Walsh Cup: Mellett's goal sets up eight-point win for Kenny's Dubs

December 15, 2019

Dublin's Paul Crummey and Robbie Greville of Westmeath

Dublin got their 2020 campaign off to a winning start at the expense of Westmeath in today’s Walsh Cup SH round 2 fixture at Cusack Park.

Aidan Mellett scored the game’s only goal as Mattie Kenny’s side secured a 1-22 to 0-17 victory.

Mellett found the back of the home side’s net in the 14th minute and that helped establish a 1-15 to 0-9 half-time cushion for the team in Sky Blue.

The Shane O’Brien managed Westmeath – who defeated Carlow by four points last weekend - shaded the second-half exchanges by eight points to seven but had left themselves with too big a mountain to climb.

They will look to return to winning ways when they travel to take on Laois in Round 3 on Sunday, January 5.

Next up for the Dubs is a home fixture with Carlow on the same day.
