Meath vs Antrim - 3 Like(s)
A replay was not only the correct decision, it was thee ONLY decision that made any sense. Both teams cannot go into the Liam McMarthy next season and Meath were awarded a trophy for a game they had not won...its a no brainer. Yeah, it totally stinks for both sides (particularly Meath) but lads, in the scheme of things, it aint the end of the world! Mistakes happen..people are only human!

The Dubs!! Best team BY FAR over the past number of years PLUS they are entertaining! Defo NOT Tyrone as their supporters are harder to listen to than the wife when I tell her I'm off for a pint on a Saturday afternoon!

Replying To Seannie Og:  "Kilclief have the numbers but preferred to carry on the stag party. Castlewellan should have numbers. Not enough being done to keep it going. Ballela will always stuggle given where yhey are."
Bit harsh on Castlewellan there Seannie....I think they do try but, like a lot of clubs in Down, the 'big-ball' game takes priority and a lot of lads are facing an uphill battle to get their respective committees to assist in getting hurling promoted. Ballella, year in year out, seem to struggle to field in the league and then, come championship, they have a panel of 25 without any problem...strange that is! Surely its about time Downpatrick got a hurling team gathered up? There must be a raft of hurlers within that town who would be keen to get hurling developed in that area again? The more clubs we can get to field, the more competitive the leagues will be resulting in more games for all the clubs and the senior county team can benefit immensely. I really admire Warrenpoint for striving to get a senior hurling team fielded season after season in an area where Gaelic football is much more prominent; kudos to their club, committee and hurling mentors!

Ballycran 0-15 V 2-7 Portaferry Ventured over to this one with a very cross (and wet!) grandchild in tow, but very glad I did! My prediction was 100% spot on as well ! Thought this was going to be a tight hard game and so it proved! There was nothing between the sides in the first half with a Ballycran goal disallowed (think square ball). There was only 1 or 2 points between them at half time (Ballycran in front). The second half saw a Portaferry forward receive a straight red but despite that the Ports scored 2 goals (the second one was a great score when the forward cut in from the left and slotted the ball into the back of the net). Ballycran hit a fair few wides in the second half but overall I thought they played the better hurling, had a bit more desire and deserved the victory. Hard to know if the Ports had kept 15 men on the field would the result have been different... was tight, hard game up until that point though! The Ballycran half back, think it was Woods, was excellent as was Dineen for Ballycran. Would be interested to know if either team had many missing for this one....? Portaferry are 3rd from bottom on goals/points difference only BUT the second from bottom team (Cushendall) have TWO games in hand....guess who the Ports play next!! DIVISION 1 HURLING Sun 24 Jul 2016 Ballycran V Loughgiel Portaferry V Cushendall

RESULTS DIVISION 1 Ruairí Óg 2-16 v 0-14 Ballygalget Galgets were always going to find this one tough. DIVISION 2 Portaferry 5-12 vs 1-07 Naomh Gall The Ports destroy St Galls and remain the team to beat in Div 2. They should be back amongst the big boys at the end of the season. DIVISION 3 Bredagh 0-18 vs 1-19 Carryduff Cracking game this and one I felt the Duff thoroughly deserved to win! Conway was by far the best player on view! I also thought that the wee corner forward for Duff (dunno his name was a class act!) The first half goal from the Duff forward proving to be, more or less, the difference between the teams at FT. That's a serious result for Carryduff and a really bad one for a Bredagh team that were fancied to annex the IHC again this year...

I see the Ports have entered a Minor team into Antrim ACMHL Division 2. Meanwhile, the Crans have entered Antrim ACMHL Division 1. Great to see these clubs pushing into Antrim at this level.

Good luck to Antrim in the final; I hope they go on and win it and I think they have got better as the competition has progressed."
I think this was a year to forget, I think the co board have to take responsibility, fair play to the 3 men who put their hands up, but the county as a whole is a hurling car crash I.e development squads, coaching, and bringing through young players, it hasn't been the same since they done away with a hurling board"]I think some of the posts on here in relation to our CR campaign are very harsh. Lets be realistic!! Given our current crop of players do you REALLY think we would win the CR...no way!! I think the fact we got to the semi-final was on a par to the level we are at...We had a cracking result away to London (league above us) so there are positives from the CR campaign. The lads involved in the management, I thought, done a decent enough job with the players at their disposal. To say ''county as a whole is a hurling car crash'' is a lot of utter nonsense! The Crans are fielding THREE senior teams in Down; Galgets and Crans are in Div 1 in Antrim and the Ports are on course for a swift return to the top Antrim tier as well. Carryduff & Bredagh are also execlling in the Antrim league just now so there are more positives than negatives! There is some outstanding work being done with our Celtic Challenge squad (as an example). That old 'bring through young players' escape clause simply does not cut it with me as you would REALLY struggle to name me 4/5 young players under the age of 20 who would get onto our current Down starting 15..! The realistic situation within Down hurling is that there are THREE clubs in the Ards who provide 95% of the Down squad..this will NEVER change no matter what the Co Board put in place. So instead of criticising these clubs perhaps a bit more support for them would be the way forward!

Wednesday 10th Aug 2016 Minor Hurling Championship (Group 1) Portaferry vs Carryduff (Ports remain the team to beat at this level and will should win this handy enough) Bredagh vs Newry Shamrocks (Bredagh should be too strong here) Minor Hurling Championship (Group 2) Ballygalget vs Ballycran (Best game on offer in this competition tonight. Both teams are level on points and both need a win to progress to the later stages....hard one to call but I will stick my neck on the line and go for an away victory!) Minute Silence - 1 Like(s)

Replying To wfkerry:  "I think its an absolute disgrace that the Gaa are going cutting the minutes silence to 20 seconds have a bit of respect for the person who have passed on its not all about money or TV rights everything about the Gaa right now is professional except the poor players who give their life to the cause not forgetting all the volunteers at grass root level.. I minute of their time is not too much to ask more than likely it will go from 20 seconds to 0 i think very soon they will have to remove the word amu"
Not often I post on the 'main' forum but I felt compelled to when I read this! I think this is DISGUSTING! The GAA have become distanced from the regular punters and are total danger of alienating the people who make this such a great organization in the first place! Why oh why do the powers that be continually feel the need to meddle/change/alter with the rules etc... For me the proposal to reduce the minutes silence to 20 seconds is a step too far! The GAA have gone from a sport belonging to the people to a commercially run organisation where the bottom line is the amount of $$$$ showing as a plus on the balance sheet at the end of the year!

Down Teams in the Antrim League - 2017 - 1 Like(s)
Question to 'Antrimhurler' Thanks for the insight BUT your comments don't really make sense to me. Last year in Antrim there was a Div 3, 4 and at the later stages, I believe there was a Div 5 as well. It looks like last years Div 3,4 & 5 are now known as 'Div3/4 combined'..is that correct? I still don't understand why Antrim would merge all these divisions into one division. If you look at some of the results, there are some teams getting some serious hammerings (no good to anyone that)...So I don't understand the logic of merging all these teams into one league. Will this league actually split at some point into a Div 3 & 4 proper? Your statement -> 'The original makeup of the Div 3 & 4 were rejigged to allow a team to remain in Div 3 who should have been relegated & promote a Div 4 team to Div 3, not because of their league position, as they didn't achieve promotion as per last years rules' ... makes no sense to me at all. If a team was going to get relegated why where they not relegated as per rule? I don't at all understand why you would promote a team who has not earned it or rejig the division to accommodate these team(s)... makes no sense at all to me.. Any clarification would be appreciated - thanks.

Well pleased to see Carryduff beat Ballela for the simple reason being that the Duff attempt to field at all levels! Well done and I look forward to seeing them against their noisy neighbours down the road for a place in the IHC Final !

The players and management cannot control who they play against or the level of opposition! They are in the final, at least show a bit of support! Hard to believe there are supposed Down hurling men/women on here who begrudge these lads a little bit of success and a little time in the lime-light!

You are wrong about the Ards clubs being the backbone of Down hurling. Kilclief had 14 senior titles before Ballygalget and Ballycran even existed. It's easy enough to gather up senior titles when you only play hurling. The Ards clubs should maybe try to become full GAA clubs and promote the association in its entirety. This 'back to the Ards' hurling is utter rubbish. The management team should be ashamed of themselves. Sitting mid table in what is essentially division 4 is a disgrace. The South Down team when it existed were at a higher level. I would back a non Ards selection to beat the current team. Micky Johnston got better results and further in competitions and half of the Ards wouldn't play for him and the clubs did everything to upset his plans. The current management have put Down hurling back at least 20 years. It's time for a root and branch change in the Down hurling scene. The indiscipline of some of the players cannot be allowed to continue. How many matches had Caolan Bailie completed recently. He's no good to a team sitting in the stands with the supporters and his team struggling with a player short. pmack Not sure what planet you are on pmakc, but regardless if you agree or disagree, the Ards clubs DO provide the backbone of our senior hurling team. The fact that you refer to Kilclief having 14 senior titles before the Galgets and the Crans even existed is a mute point; that must be 40+years ago! I would also take issue with the fact that the Ards clubs should try to become a 'full GAA club'..what an utterly ridiculous statement! If that's the case the same would apply to KIlcoo, Burren, Mayobridge, RGU, Loughinisland (I could go on and on) as the clubs I have listed all concentrate on the big ball game! The current management have only took over recently so perhaps you should give them a chance before jumping on their backs...they have yet to lift a hurl in anger in the CR, so perhaps we should wait and see how they progress in that competition. Where we DO agree, is the indiscipline within the camp and it would be my view that that indiscipline cost us a place in the SHC Final a few days ago. With regards to the non-Ards hurlers involvement in the senior hurling team, Hughes went to concentrate on football; McCrickard was on the panel and to the best of my knowledge left of his own accord; Magee is still there as far as I can tell but I would love to know where big McCusker is from Ballela as he was outstanding this past few years. Not sure Conway is this year or if he is on the panel. So yes, no-Ards players are getting selected...it remains to be seen if they are as fully committed as the Ards players or not. Lastly, if a South Down team (I assume you are referring to the now defunct Down Juniors?) where to play the current Down Senior Hurling team, I would put my house on the senior hurling team winning by 20+points...
