Down are set to appeal the red card which Caolan Mooney picked up during the Mourne men’s Ulster SFC quarter-final loss to Armagh last weekend.

Mooney was sent off after a high challenge on Orchard opponent Aidan Nugent in extra time and stands to miss his side’s first round All-Ireland SFC qualifier on June 8.

Down boss Paddy Tally questioned the decision of referee Anthony Nolan to send off his vice-captain, opining that the challenge on Nugent was “was nothing worse than other tackles which went on in the game”.

The decision proved costs for the hosts as they went down to their neighbours by the narrowest of margins (2-17 to 3-13) in the end in Newry.
