Sarsfields had little trouble in seeing off Johnstownbridge in yesterday's headline Kildare SFC clash.

Having replaced Davy Burke as Sars' manager at the end of last year, Billy O'Loughlin got one over his uncle Luke Dempsey who is in charge of Johnstownbridge.

The reigning champions ran out 2-17 to 0-10 winners at St Conleth's Park. Shane Doyle and Conor Hartley scored 1-4 and 1-3 respectively as county man Ben McCormack marked his return to championship action after spending time travelling. Johnstownbridge were forced to line out without ace attacker Daniel Flynn because of a hamstring injury.

On the same bill, Clane proved far too good for Monasterevan, 3-17 to 0-2, and Padraig Fogarty helped secure a 0-14 to 0-12 victory for 14-man St Laurence's against Eadestown.

On Saturday, Ronan Sweeney saw his first championship game as Moorefield boss end in a 2-20 to 1-6 defeat of Carbury as Eanna O'Connor registered 0-12 in an impressive display. David Hughes netted a hat trick of goals for Celbridge in their 4-20 to 2-7 win over Confey while Glenn Ryan's Round Towers defeated Naas 1-11 to 0-11.

Raheens opened with a 3-9 to 0-8 victory as they comfortably beat Maynooth on Friday. Athy and Castledermot will close out the first round in Newbridge this evening (throw-in 6pm).
