The GAA has responded to calls for a reversal of their decision to refuse permission to host the Liam Miller testimonial match at Páirc Úi Chaoimh.

In a statement released on its website this evening, the GAA says it would not make a decision from hosting games "other than those under the control of the Association in its stadia and grounds and that "only a change at Annual Congress can alter this situation."

"The GAA is prohibited in rule from hosting games other than those under the control of the Association in its stadia and grounds. The Cork County Committee and Central Council have no discretion in this matter.

"Only a change at Annual Congress can alter this situation. Congress takes place in February each year.

"The GAA has sought legal advice around funding received towards the redevelopment of Páirc Uí Chaoimh and believes it is compliant with the terms and conditions laid down in September 2016.

"The Association re-affirms its offer to provide hospitality facilities at the venue free gratis to assist fundraising efforts around the Liam Miller Tribute Match and wish the event organisers every success in their endeavours."

The fundraiser for the late Republic of Ireland international will instead take place on September 25 at the nearby Turner's Cross, which holds only 7,000 and all tickets have already sold out.

With the high demand for tickets, "attempts were made" to stage the testimonial match at the famous 45,000-capacity Cork GAA stadium which Liam experienced winning before going on to enjoy a successful soccer career.

But Cork are bound by GAA rules which meant they could not make the Páirc available for a one-off soccer game.
