Replying To s goldrick:  "this moving counties between provinces on a rotational basis is a ridiculous idea. I have seen it proposed before. either you scrap the provinces or you leave them otherwise it's making things MORe complicated rather than less. Personally I would scrap the provinces completely, have the championship as a 32 county knockout with div 3 and 4 competing against each other in round one.
the 8 winners playing against the div2 teams in round 2. the 8 winners playing against the div 1 teams in round 3. then you are left with quarters, semis and a final. the league then takes on more importance as it should do."
Local rivalry is the heartbeat of the GAA. You say it's ridiculous to try and even up the provinces and would scrap them altogether- talk about killing the goose that lays the golden egg. Tweaking the provincials is not making anything more complicated. Fixtures would be easily worked out start of year both for championship proper and qualifier rounds. Local rivalry is healthy and makes attending games both more attractive and easier logistically for fans. An open draw is the more ridiculous option- fans will not travel in numbers the length of the country for some early round match. You want evidence? Head into Breffni this evening and do a head count. There will be not near the crowd you'd have for say a Derry-Tyrone, Derry-Donegal, Derry-Monaghan etc match. And don't forget this is one step off an AI Quarter. Imagine if it were only a first round game!!

so if we have rotating counties, one year Fermanagh could win Connacht, the next year not be able to defend it. Longford likewise. how would the record books look. if you are looking at the history of the provincial championships.I just think it makes a mockery of the whole provincials, that's why I would prefer to either keep them or scrap them. I wouldn't mind travelling down to Tipperary for a round 1 match or a round 2 or 3 or whatever. scrap replays and have extra-time. if the provincial councils want to keep their competitions well then let them but don't have them feeding in to the all-ireland. We have already established that it is grossly unfair.. Central council should run the all-ireland championship from start to finish.

do away with the back door system. Bring in a round robin system in each province. Munster and Connacht could both have each team in their province playing other with the top two in the final. While Ulster and Lenister each go with two groups, with top team in each group playing in the final. No replays. Just like the league divisions, have as many teams as possible playing on the same day. Just stagger the finals. TV can still get its fill of games, by having games on Saturday and Sunday.
The round robin system would mean all teams certain to get at least 3 games, compared to the 2 now.

2700 at a game to send you into a QF tells you all about the back door.... There would be as many at a Div 4 league game..!! Totally embarrassing...!!!

If Fermanagh were good enough to win Connaught this year then they would be good enough to win Ulster next year. The history books would tell you they were a bloody good team and I don't think too many Fermanagh people would complain they never got to defend one of the cups.
Like you, I'd have no problem travelling down to Tipp for a round 1 or 2 match but what I said was fans would not travel in numbers. There's no point pretending different if we're going about restructuring the Championship.
I don't think an extra inter county competition and more matches would do the club scene any favours. Having the provincials part of the AI series spice it up. To even up the numbers and condense the playing season makes sense. Whatever changes do happen then they need to consider two things. 1- the guy hitting the road with the wife and two kids and 2- the Club Player. TV exposure and Sky deals do make commercial sense but we don't need to sell our soul in the process.

Sean...never mind the attendance of 2700, I'd be more worried about the fact that a Counties like Tipperary and Clare are in the Q/Finals of the All-Ireland whilst the strongholds of Cavan & Derry are not, yet, some folk on this forum think the Cavan Management have done a good job and should stay on.

Tyrone Players - Won an Ulster Title last week, 7 days later, they togged out for their clubs - unlike Cavan, clubs and club players are treated with respect, and its no co-incidence with the success of Tyrone, that regardless of the County team, the club fixtures continue when the County Team are not playing.

Tipperary have 4 football AI titles- about as relevant as our title count in the grand scheme of things.

first round of championship is set to be the weekend after next! clubs wont know if its a friday, saturday or sunday probably till a few days beforehand! Also would just like to say how much of a joke it is that all clubs are playing an ACFL match on friday and sunday this weekend and then playing first round of championship the following weekend! Yet again no remorse shown for clubs! + they have added alot more games to championship this year so that they can collect more $

I'd say it would be a little arrogant on our behalf to assume we expect a lot higher than Tipperary football folk. They, like ourselves, have put in huge work in their underage football over the last number of years. But if the state of the club scene is anything to go by then I'd say we don't expect much of ourselves at all and are punching above our weight.

Have a look at previous posts...There's lads who believe that we would have been favorites to beat Tipp, and they'd fancy our chances against Galway....total disrepect for the Tipp folk!

Dean if you're saying Tipp should be respected and we have no right to be thinking they're a gimme then I agree with you. However I understood your last post to be saying we're some sort of football juggernaut and they're a minnow. Listen, I'm disappointed we didn't beat Derry, I think we would have had a great chance against Tipp and Galway if we did indeed get that far. Unfortunately we lost, we move on. It's the meltdowns and attempted lynchings afterwards I have the issues with.

That was me. .

Derry were 4/7 to beat Tipp. Do you not think we would have been similar? How is that disrespectful?

I have every sympathy with the posters who are training all year and have no games to play. It has become too elitist at county level and it is creating huge division. I have heard many theories as to how we should fix the league but as I dont play anymore, this is not in the front of m mind and here is why.

As a Cavan far and a fan of my club, I would like to see both do well. Same as I would like to see the Cavan champions go out and win an Ulster club championship etc. I want the best players to play games and develop. We need an elite set up for the county team and this can be done. But my major concern as a fan with my Cavan hat on is this. Plenty has been spoken about players who used to be on the panel or were great underage and never made it fully. If we look at examples like Brian Sankey, Joshua Hayes, Declan McKiernan, Chris Conroy, etc - I know some may be injured there but they are men who could play for Cavan regularly. Tom Hayes is the prime example in my eyes. I know he played a part against Derry but what else has he played for the county this year? Very very little. So with the fixture farce in play on the club scene, one of our brightest young talents is only playing training games with the county rather than full blooded games at club level where he could accelorate his performances and put his hand up to the county manager and selectors. This is my biggest worry about the present system - we have young fringe players or players who could force their way into the county team from outside the squad but they are not getting the opportunity to do so.

A players career is short and if we factor in modern life and how players now travel for a year or 2 then we can ill afford to be letting some of our best talent slip by the way side...

Hardtimes - I'm not saying everyone, but had we have beaten Derry, there's some people on this forum that would have believed that Tipperary to be an easy pushover. We are all disappointed about the Derry loss, and we should move on, but where do we move to? I think the the word 'lynching' is a bit harsh, but the Co Board certainly need to take a good look at the future and make a quick decision. Granted, we'll be playing Division 1 football next year, but the championship and previous championships have been nothing short of a failure. If you look at Tipperary, they won an U21 Munster Final last year, reached the All Ireland, and then a year later, with many of their U21 side, they find themselves beating the likes of Cork and Derry and in an All Ireland Q/Final. If you look at Cavan's U21 successes over the last few years, we didnt reach an All Ireland Final, and we've never reached an Ulster Final, and failed miserably in the qualifiers, so something has certainly got to give.

Could not agree more. I would love to know how many actual games of football some of the players you mentioned actually played this year??? They are kept from the clubs by the county, and county management don't play them or don't give them a fair chance hence they stagnate and fail to develop to their full potential. The county set up owes it to the clubs to use and develop players they get and keep from clubs. I could add to your list, Jack Brady , great potential, no consistent games played, Liam Buchanan?? Barry Reilly., Philly Tinnelly? Conor Finnegan? Joe Dillon? It's an insult throwing these players in for 5- 8 mins at the end of games when they have put in the same effort at training as everyone else. 8-9 months training for 30 mins football is no joke. If it's a case of them not being good enough they should be released back to the clubs. The one who is biggest shame of all, Declan Mc Kiernan, major midfield talent but was constantly under used and underdeveloped at County level.
On matters club , will Kingscourt hold the title, I fancy Lacken, they look in good shape Finbar Reilly has them very fit, or will Anthony Forde surprises us all with Gaels, killygary dark horses?? Should be a good few weeks of football now.
