Cavan have upped it in second half, still struggling to get scores, should have had a penalty. Game changing decision by the referee. Derry are cruising.

4 in it now, 6 minutes left, looks an insurmountable task.

Ahh hard luck lads. The poor first half ultimately cost us. We just didn't perform, but things were much improved in the second half. The ff for Derry beat us on his own, all this talk about glass but he did very little, mcGuigan up front did the damage. The referee had a huge input regarding the penalty that wasn't given, but that's football. Remember, Derry are AI favourites. There's no reason why Cavan can't win the all Ireland.

Hopefully will have learned a lot from today's performance both management and team. Kildare are a big team do it will be a big task.
Best of luck.

No reason why they can't Ned but lets not blow smoke up their asses either . You won't win an AI by running around like headless chickens into blind alleys all day long . No team work in the forwards . Lost count of the number of times our forwards were swamped by their own men looking for easy ball . No one willing to do the hard or clever yards . Our full back was beat for pace all day long but management did nothing to counteract this for all of the first half .

Anyway , if we were to lose one championship game this year then this was the one to lose . As someone already said hopefully the players and management have learned something from today and get it right the next day . There is undoubted talent there .

The boys put in a huge effort in the second half and were a kick of a ball away from getting a draw. They kept going to the end and with a bit of luck they might well have won. The penalty decision in the second half may have resulted in a turn around of 4 points.

I thought Derry looked comfortable enough and were happy to sit back and it almost cost them . Yes we had plenty of endeavour but never really looked like we knew what we were doing . Cavan crowd were pretty flat as well . Got a bit excited at the end but like the team never got going . I suppose if Derry are that good then it's not a bad sign for us but a huge improvement is needed . Time will tell .

Bar david brady this is a very very average minor team, derry has been their first tough test and use were lucky to even get so close to derry. Some of the stuff written on here about this minor team is delusional...

Back to div 4 football or third tier hurling with you. What about raythornes 3 points from play or the performance of fortune and reilly to name but three others. The forwards had an off day. Look at wide total for cavan. Besides what are you doing on this forum. Do Antrim gaels not concentrate on club game from early june?

TheConvent from Antrim,

I disagree with you. Cavan have a strong panel of very good players. They just weren't used in the strongest way on Sunday.
Our full back, who is a good player , was roasted and left there. Goalie and back were very unfortunate that they let that ball through, was a game changer. Kick outs over the side-line shouldn't be tolerated on a calm day. Forwards were playing an individual rather than a cohesive team role, constantly running into the tackle, no bit of magic on display Sunday. Our normally talented mid=field struggled, although this is no small part due to the fact Derry are very good.
Subs could have been brought on sooner, we needed fresh legs and ideas. Derry looked more comfortable on the ball at times. One could argue all day that we should have been given a penalty, but even so, and if we had converted it, I still think Derry are slightly the stronger team, they didn't even need to use Glass near the goals, and they appeared to be strolling about in second gear.
A new approach is needed for the next day, Management be strong, make tough, if even unpopular decisions if needs be, we can do it, but the shackles of the Mc Rory have to be left behind, and use the best players in their best positions. This is a great chance for us, lets get behind the team and support Cavan.

Folks

Some of the Goalkeepers kick outs in the second half were in the Stephen Cluxton class, one of the features of the game.

A lot of poor play and bad defending on Sunday by the minor team.... It was plain to be seen in their previous matches that while scoreing plenty the were giveing up far too many easy chances and when you come up against better oppisition then there will be only one outcome... There are many fine players on the team and hopefully they can up their game for Kildare....

Does everyone think that the best minor players in the county were on the panel for the 2015 championship ????

From my point of view there were a lot of talented footballers not included in the final Cavan County championship panel of 2015.

The basis for this opinion is formed from viewing the full range of 2015 club footballers (right through all divisions) since the year 2010 and in particular the full year of 2014 and 2015 YTD.

There are better players out there but seems to be St Pats plus a few imo. I can think of a least 6 who would have made an impact last week and as far as I know are playing minor and senior for their clubs

Surely these lads can be brought into the panel for the Kildare games . It's not as if we have a game plan or if we did it wasn't evident on Sunday last.
Time for a rethink

Incidentally a poster made a comment that surely the management looked at all games in all divisions. The answer is no. We are amalgamated with Redhills and Drumalee in Div 2. Didn't spot any of them at any games. Maybe they were at other games, but def not any of the ones we played.

That's because the panel is picked on a trial basis because that's when the lads are playing against the other good players in the county and training with them . In club games you can have a player marking some one two years younger then him which does not give a fair reflection of how good they actually are and that's often why the management may not always be as every game . Trials are the only way to separate the best from the rset . There may be other reasons why lads aren't on panels maybe they don't have the commitment and drive necessary. Very often just because you are a good footballer doesn't mean you will cut it on a county panel !!! I wish the lads the best in the big game !

I take your point in relation the highlighted comment that the management were not seen at club matches but let's focus on the trials and Ulster league.

The following players showed excellent form at the trials and Ulster league games (even in the absence of many who made the final starting 15 due to injury, etc at the time)

-Sean O Connor Cootehill - Super half forward who had an excellent year on the Cootehill intermediate championship winning team of 2014. Sean was actually on the county
minor panel for 2014 and showed super promise for the future. Sean showed up well during trials and Ulster league games.

-Daire Mc Enroe Castlerahan - Over six foot tall and one of the best under age forwards since he was U13. Again also on the panel for 2014 and came on as a sub V's Armagh but
based on his performance during trials and Ulster league games would have been a serious player to support the efforts against a big (in stature) Derry
team.
Imagine if Cavan could have left David Brady at midfield with Daire playing as a forward.

-Adam Rehill Mountnugent - Over six and a half foot tall with a unique ability with fielding and fast hands. Again against a big Derry team Adam would have provided much need aerial
ability and demonstrated this during play time this year

-Aodhgan Watters Ballyhaise - Yet again another six foot plus player who has been prominent at division 1 underage football since U13. An attacking half back/half forward who
played well during trials and in Ulster games was a superb attacking ball player who scored 1 goal and 2 points despite only getting 1 and a bit Ulster
league game time.
Competent ball carriers were missing out of the team in the Ulster final in 2015 and evident in all successful inter county teams.

-Breffni Mc Kiernan Shannon Gales - Another six footer who has an immense mobility around the field and again played extremely well during his afforded time on the pitch in 2015.
Breffni is a brother of Gearoid Mc Kiernan but in his own merit through trials/games deserved a place on the final 24 man panel.

I am not sure if James Brady - Ramor, Killian Maguire - Ramor, Cian Carolan - Laragh, were included in the final 24 man panel but it would be interesting to find out for sure ?

Well worth noting that the first win for Cavan in the Ulster league of 2015 included many of the above !!!!!

It's all a matter of opinion though isn't it.. The management's opinion is what counts. And especially at Minor level there's no way of knowing if the lads above would have been any better. A similar argument stating the strengths of all of the players on the panel could be made.

Also, Breffni McKiernan is from Swanlinbar.
