What are you talking about? This is a thread on the championship, the last round and the subsequent fixtures at the weekend. Gaels Castlerahan is a huge game. Gaels need to win it. Simple.

I actually think the pressure is on castlerahan. They know they could practically knock the gaels out on friday night and increase there chances tenfold of winning a championship. If Castlerahan dont beat them friday night they wont beat them in a championship final in breffni in october!!

Of course there's pressure on Castlerahan. It's championship and they would love nothing better to knock the Gaels out. But they'll still have another round to go if they lose albeit they won't want the gamble of who the last fixture could be. But for the Gaels it's do or die. They simply have to win.

The Gaels losing a group game is being way over analysed now I feel. PatTheDandy (Cavan) - Posts: 356 - 14/08/2018 12:25:19 2133148 Link 0 |
The tread is about the championship but turned into " Gaels don't perform in Ulster " thread. Well Castlerahan don't perform in Cavan when they have too so let's see Friday night are they still the nearly men or real championship contenders. The pressure is on Castlerahan to put the Gaels out of the championship. Let's see who stands up to the task . Inaroundehouse (Cavan) - Posts: 975 - 14/08/2018 12:34:06 2133152 Link 0 |
If Gaels lose they won't be out. They'll have two games still to win which they probably will. Gaels have the best 15 in the competition but their bench is not great and got exposed in Ulster last year with a couple of injuries. Ramor probably the best squad considering all the players they are missing and still have a strong team. doratheexplorer (Cavan) - Posts: 1467 - 14/08/2018 12:44:33 2133156 Link 0 |
If Cavan Gaels lose Friday night they still won't be out of the championship. With only 12 teams in it, two wins will get you at least into a play-off. theDagger1986 (Cavan) - Posts: 181 - 14/08/2018 12:49:44 2133163 Link 0 |
The pressure is firmly at Cavan Gaels door. They need to win. Look at last year's table where Crosserlough lost 2 games and missed out on the quarter finals. It'll be even tighter this year with only 12 teams compared to 14, the calibre of the remaining 12 teams being better than last year's 14 now that weaker teams have been relegated.

The Gaels had a great year in Ulster last year although they avoided the heavy weights on their run. The final showed major areas where they need to improve. Lack of power in critical positions was a problem for them. They're reasonably young and this year you would have hoped they'd build and improve on this but they're now in the situation of needing a win to stay in the group stages. Of course they have the ability to turn it around but Castlerahan are a decent outfit. This result is far from a foregone conclusion. Gaels need to prove themselves at the weekend. I don't understand the offence you're taking in what I'm saying.

Did Cavan Gaels not beat Crosserlough in the quarter final last year?

I stand corrected Dora. You're probably right. 4 points could be enough for a playoff.

Something has to be done anout the state of reffing in championship , ramor v lacken was a joke with 50 frees been giving 9 yellow cards 2 blacks and a red and there wasnt a dirty tackle in the game and the decision to over turn conor bradleys free was just rediculous . Also at the castlerahan game there was so many frees for nothing and there was a kick on a coothill player infront of linesman and ref and wasnt a card giving . There are only a handful of referies in cavan fit to handle champioship games and it idls showen when we go outside of ulster . cavanlawd123 (Cavan) - Posts: 70 - 14/08/2018 14:12:10 2133208 Link 0 |
It's every clubs aim to compete in Ulster ONCE they have won their respective co championship. You speak about the Gaels nearly been relegated. You speak about them falling short in Ulster. You say they need to beat Castlerahan but make no reference to the fact after all these years maybe it's Castlerahan who need to beat the Gaels to justify their so called potential and to banish the " nearly men" tag. Yes the Gaels nearly got relegated then came back and won the championship the following year. What does that say. If they lose Friday night will Castlerahan go on and win it out? 4 points will keep a team in the top 8 I think. Credit where credit is due the Gaels are a fine outfit who keep coming back year after year whether they have won or lost the previous year. Lots of lads have plenty of medals and can keep motivated year after year for more success. It's up to the Castlerahans of this world to step up. So the pressure is on them. The Gaels been nearly relegated or falling short in Ulster has no reference to the thread. Inaroundehouse (Cavan) - Posts: 975 - 14/08/2018 15:07:40 2133236 Link 0 |
Outside of the oneupmanship on this thread its great that theres even an debate on who will win the senior championship. Up to a month ago nobody would have given anybody outside the gaels a chance of winning it but now its back in the melting pot which is great. I think the question of pressure is a moot point. All the teams pushing for a title have pressure on them. The gaels have shown over the last two decades they can live with the pressure as Gowna did before them. Championships are hard won and becomes as much about mental strength as physical. Castlerahan have thrown everything at it in the last number of years in terms of preparation back room teams etc and fair play to them. Yet they sit with nothing to show for it. Killygarry and Lacken are the same so many questions remain whether these team have the mental fortitude to stay the course. magicsponge (Cavan) - Posts: 5 - 14/08/2018 17:46:52 2133335 Link 0 |
The Junior Championship is starting to get interesting now, will try and predict the games this weekend. GAAhead2017 (Cavan) - Posts: 82 - 14/08/2018 19:35:04 2133369 Link 0 |
Denn v Drumlane - Big game for both sides, could be a bit of shadow boxing neither side may not want to show there full hand as they will be likely to meet again at some stage. If Denn can curtail Connolly then I expect them to come through. Denn by 3. gaelicfooty15 (Cavan) - Posts: 242 - 14/08/2018 23:00:37 2133424 Link 0 |
Hello folks, enjoying the discussion on club championship on here. An early exit for the Gaels would no doubt make for a better sfc for the neutrals. A question on the format- after each team plays 4 open draw matches, are there 8 quarter finalists or do the top 2 go straight to semis with 4 in the qf? Are head-to-heads used to decide final places. with an 8 team list you could still qualify on 4 points? Eddie the Exile (Monaghan) - Posts: 1047 - 14/08/2018 23:11:34 2133428 Link 0 |
As the saying goes pressure is for tyres and all this chat about which of the Gaels or Ourselves are under the most pressure is absolute nonsense. Cavan Gaels lie in 8th position after loosing their first game so are still in place to qualify score difference will come into it and while either side are capable of taking the victory in round two a loss for either side will not put them out as they will score heavily against all but a coupe of the other sides in it. The Gaels have been the top Senior side over the last dozen or so years and it will be some time before they are anything other than Favorites to win the Oliver Plunkett cup . Reality is Castlerahan winning on Friday does not remove Cavan Gaels from the championship so in fact is a facile victory. What I do not understand is why this as a repeat of last years final and the stand out fixture in this round is not scheduled for Sunday Afternoon. Showing my age but Sunday Afternoons is when real championship football is played rahanman (Cavan) - Posts: 127 - 14/08/2018 23:22:40 2133430 Link 0 |
Eight quarter-finalists where 1 plays 8, 2 plays 7, 3 plays 6 and 4 plays 5. Referring to Dora's correction of my earlier comment...I had forgotten there was a play off last year as 4 teams ended on 4 points. Kingscourt beat Crosserlough in the first playoff and Cootehill beat Ballinagh, after a draw, in the second. Crosserlough beat Ballinagh in the third play off game which determined the last quarter-finalist. The quarter-final pairing were Cavan Gaels v Crosserlough, Castlerahan v Cootehill, Killygarry v Kingscourt and Ramor v Lavey.

Denn v Drumlane - Should be a lot of clues here as to what both can do, and how effective the likes of Connolly, TED & Keogan are going to be against a top team in the Division. Drumlane by 1. PatTheDandy (Cavan) - Posts: 356 - 15/08/2018 09:22:06 2133478 Link 0 |
