Shortened inter-county season hits jersey sales

The new Limerick jersey for 2019.

The shortening of the inter-county season last year led to a decline in replica GAA jersey sales.

The slump in sales contributed to sportswear manufacturer O’Neill’s and sports retailer Elvery’s suffering sharp drops in pre-tax profits.

Commenting on the impact of the shortened GAA season, O’Neill’s director Paul Towell said: “It shortened the lead in time to generate interest around the finals and coincided with the end of school holidays, all of which had a negative effect on sales."

The biggest selling replica jerseys in 2018 were All-Ireland winners Limerick and Dublin.
