Peter Cooney RIP

Galway hurling is mourning the passing of Peter Cooney at the age of 49 after a long battle with cancer.

Part of a famous Galway hurling family, Peter won two All-Ireland club SHC medals and five Galway SHC medals with his beloved Sarsfields. He lined out alongside his brothers Jimmy, Pakie, Michael, Joe and Brendan in those successes and was also the holder of an All-Ireland U21HC medal, while Jimmy and Joe won the Liam MacCarthy Cup with Galway.

One of Peter's best performances came in the drawn 1992 Galway SHC final against Carnmore when he scored 0-6 from play.

Survived by his wife Emer, sons Oisin, Cormac and Eanna, Peter's funeral Mass will take place in St Patrick's Church, Bullaun on Sunday morning.

May he rest in peace.
