Kilkenny camogie legend Ann Downey has taken charge of Ballyragget men’s hurlers for the forthcoming season.

It makes the 13-time All-Ireland winner one of the first women, if not the first, to take the managerial reins of a senior men’s club team in a county with such rich tradition and success as Kilkenny.

Having reached the All-Ireland club IHC final in 2018, Ballyragget will be keen for an immediate return to the senior ranks this year after having been relegated this past October.

"I'm looking forward to it, because there are some great young lads that can hurl here," Downey is quoted saying by the Irish Independent.

As for her hopes for the team in 2020, she added: "You would hope to go back up, to be quite honest, that would be the aim."
