An SDLP councillor and LGBT campaigner has called on the GAA to take part in Belfast's gay pride parade in early August.

Séamas de Faoite revealed to the Irish News that he has contacted the GAA, Ulster Rugby and IFA (Irish Football Association) to take part in the parade after the GAA confirmed its participation in Dublin Pride for the first time next weekend.

"I was delighted to see the GAA commit to taking part in this year's Dublin Pride parade. It is truly a sign of the scale of social change across Ireland over the last decade," the south Belfast councillor explained.

"There have already been huge efforts across these islands to eliminate homophobia from sports.

"This would be an excellent opportunity for all three sporting codes to show their support and appreciation for LGBT+ players, coaches, volunteers, staff and supporters."
