There were opening round victories for Bishopstown and Sarsfields in the Cork SHC tonight.

Former county panellist Pa Cronin scored 1-7, including a late penalty goal, as Bishopstown sprung a 1-14 to 1-13 surprise victory on Newtownshandrum in Mourneabbey.

Now a decade since they last claimed the championship title, Newtown were never behind until Cronin's 29th minute match-winner.

Meanwhile, at the Mallow GAA Sports Complex, Sarsfields proved too strong for Kanturk, 2-24 to 0-11.

The 2014 winners were 1-16 to 0-4 ahead at half time with Luke Hackett netting the goal.

Hackett pounced for a second Sars' major on 57 minutes as they issued a huge statement of intent.
