Europe's new Ryder Cup captain Padraig Harrington cut his sporting teeth in gaelic games.

The three-times major winner was this afternoon confirmed as the man to lead Europe at Whistling Straits, Wisconsin in September, 2020, having been vice-captain for the last three Ryder Cups in 2014, '16 and '18.

As a teenager, the 47-year-old Dubliner lined out in goals for both Ballyboden St Enda's and Colaiste Eanna before opting to hang up his boots and focus full time on golf.

He inherited his love of the GAA from his father, Paddy, who won two Munster championships with Cork in the 1950s.
