Aherne: we just wanted to show what we can do

Sinead Aherne says Dublin were more focussed on themselves than the opposition in Sunday’s All-Ireland ladies football final.

Much was made of the fact that the Dubs were facing Cork – who had beaten them in three successive finals between 2014 and 2016 – but it was never about revenge for Mick Bohan’s charges.

“We just wanted to come out and play and show what we can do,” winning captain Aherne told The Irish Sun. “The fact that we were playing Cork, we just knew we had to be at the peak of our game and that was it.

“This year has probably been a bit different — for the first time in a few years we’ve been looking forward instead of looking back.

“So it was about us and what we could do to push our game to the next level. That was the approach that we took.”
