Waterford Crystal Cup 2012
Clare 0-18 Limerick 1-15 - Quarter Final

WATERFORD CRYSTAL CUP/Limerick 1-15 Clare 0-18 (after double extra time)

TWO LOTS of extra-time couldn't separate neighbours and rivals Clare and Limerick in the Waterford Crystal Senior Hurling Cup quarter-final, played under lights at Sixmilebridge on Saturday. At the end of normal time the sides were level, again after two periods of 10 minutes and even when a further two phases of five minutes were played, they were locked on level scores. Over the 100 minutes, Limerick led only once, yet it was Clare who had to come from behind through an Aaron Cunningham pointed free, close to the end of this highly entertaining marathon.

It took a Declan Hannon free in injury-time - after Clare's James McInerney was adjudged to have thrown the sliotar - to send the tie to extra-time. Clare led by 0-15 to 1-11 at the end of 10 minutes but they were again level at the end of normal extra-time, 0-17 to 1-14. Limerick, with new manager John Allen on the sideline for the first time, agreed another two five-minute periods. The replay will be held at Limerick's Gaelic Grounds on Tuesday night at 7pm.

LIMERICK: N Quaid; S Walsh; T Condon; S O'Neill; B O'Sullivan; W McNamara (0-2); T Ryan; D O'Grady; C Allis (0-2), D Hannon (1-11, 0-8 frees); J Ryan; N Maher; M Carmody; T Quaid; E Gleeson. Subs: G Mulcahy for Quaid (28 mins); G O'Mahoney for Maher (45 mins); T O'Callaghan for O'Sullivan (45 mins); B Geary for Gleeson (54 mins); D Moloney for Walsh (80 mins); M Carr for Ryan (98 mins).

CLARE: P Kelly (Inagh-Kilnamona); D O'Donovan; C Dillon; C Cooney; J McInerney; E Barrett; S Morey; N O'Connell (0-6, 0-4 frees); P Donnellan (0-3); C Chaplin; D Keane; F Lynch; E Hayes (0-1), A Cunningham (0-6, frees); J Clancy (0-1). Subs: C Galvin for Hayes (50 mins); J Conlon (0-1) for Keane (56 mins); P Kelly (Clarecastle) for Chaplin (95 mins).

Senior hurling Manager
Hello there.......

There has been quite a turnover in playing personnel compared to last year. A few young fellas have been drafted in but as far as I know the most high profile players dropped are Philip Brennan and Cormac O' Donavan. There have been three new goal keepers added Pat Kelly (Inagh-Mona) Derek Fahy (Bridge) and Andrew Fahy (Whitegate). Think Andrew Fahy was the intermediate keeper last year.

In defense new additions include Pat Kelly (Magpie) - he was the full back for the intermediates last year, Seadna Morey (Bridge) - corner back for the minors the last two years (fine young player too - one to watch), Stephan O' Halloran (CCastle) - wing back for the minors the year before last and starter for under 21s last year - cousin of Davy O Halloran - young corner forward for Eire Og who played for minors in 2010 and under 21's last year, Paul Flanagan (Ballyea) - captain of 2010 minors - full or corner back, Ciaran O'Doherty (Crusheen) - captain of 09 under 21s who won the All Ireland.

Midfield: Colm Galvin (Clonlara) - One of the real stars of the minor team over the past 2 years - one to watch but 2012 might be a little to soon for him to make an impact at senior. Very skillful and good distributor. Tony Kelly (Ballyea) - Munster minor hurler of the yer last year and captained the minors this year. Fantastic prospect - he was called up but declined. Doing his leaving certificate so he needs to concentrate on that. Himself and Galvin are potentially the Lynch and Baker of the future. They have a great understanding when they play together...I have heard rumors he might join the panel after his leaving cert commitments, which would be great if only to give him a feel of the senior panel.

Forwards: Danny Russell (Eire Og), called up to the senior panel after his performances for Eire Og in the intermediate final and intermediate Munster final. Won a county under 21 medal with Eire Og in 2010. He is a fine free taker and has bags of talent- very skillful. Scored two points from play in his first senior Clare challenge game 2 weeks ago, Daire Keane (Kilmaley) - played wing forward for the intermediates last year, I think he was a minor on the 2010 team, not 100% though. Shane Golden (Sixmilebridge) - been on the Clare under 21 panel for a number of years now. Tall and strong, he is a fine prospect. Rated very highly in the Bridge. Aaron Cunningham (Wolfe Tones) - minor for Clare for the past 2 seasons. Good ball winner and well able to score a point. Fine prospect for the future. Ger Arthur (Inagh-Mona), good young player. Give him a couple more years of development though. Fine free taker and was a star for the 2010 minors.

As you can see the panel has an awful lot of young players considering the above are just the additions to the panel, you have to factor in the ages of many of the others like Pat O Connor - 20, Darach Honan - 22, John Conlon 22, Nicky O Connell 22, Donal Touhy 22, Domhnaill O'Donovan 23, Liam Markham 21, Cian Dillon 23, Conor McGrath 22, Caimin Morey 23, Colin Ryan 24 and Cathal McInerney 21.

Experience is really lacking from the Clare panel but if we keep the above together and add a couple more from the previous two years minors all bodes well for Clare hurling!!!

Clare Football 2012
Banner lose Tubridy
03 January 2012

Offaly's Niall MaNamee holds off the challenge from Mark Tubridy of Clare during the All-Ireland SFC Qualifier at Tullamore - INPHOClare wing back Mark Tubridy is the latest intercounty footballer to emigrate to Australia.

The departure of the Cooraclare clubman represents a major blow to Banner boss Micheal McDermott.

However, there is some better news for Clare football as it has emerged that Kildare native Niall Browne, who plays for the Two Mile House club, has declared for the Banner County under the parentage rule (his mother hails from Cooraclare).

Browne will play no part in the McGrath Cup - which commences against UL at Doonbeg on Sunday - but will be available for the national league.

Footballers pipped by GMIT
06 January 2012
The long break in inter-county activity ended for the Clare footballers on New Year's Day when they suffered a 0-9 to 0-10 defeat to GMIT in a challenge match in Caronmore.

Clare manager Micheal McDermott took the opportunity to look at a number of fringe players ahead of Sunday's McGrath Cup opener against UL in Doonbeg.

He told the Clare Champion: "Conditions underfoot were difficult. It was one of our first challenge matches, but there was the benefit of having a look at a lot of players on the panel that have been in the gym over the last number of months.

"It was an opportunity to see them playing football because we have to cut the panel down in the middle of January and it was only fair to give these guys an opportunity to stake their claim on the panel.

"We learned a lot from the game and we learned a lot with Sunday against UL in mind."

Clare lined out as follows against GMIT: Peter O'Dwyer; Laurence Healy, Barry Harnett, Diarmuid Daly; Shane McNeilus, Gordon Kelly, Stephen Tierney; Darren O'Neill, Ger Quinlan; Shane Brennan, Podge Collins, Sean O'Driscoll; Killian Malone, Chris Williamson, Rory Donnelly. Subs used: Dara Blake, Eoin Troy and Timmy Ryan.

Clare Football 2012
McDermott bolsters his Kilmurry contingent
04 January 2012

Clare's Martin McMahonClare football manager Micheal McDermott will be able to call on five players from county champions Kilmurry-Ibrickane for Sunday's McGrath Cup opener against UL in Doonbeg.

Last year defender Martin McMahon was the only player from the Quilty-based club to feature regularly for the county side, although Declan Callinan did made a substitute appearance in the narrow All-Ireland qualifier defeat to Down. They have been joined in this year's squad by goalkeeper Peter O'Dwyer Jnr, defender Darren Hickey and attacker Stephen Moloney. Highly-rated midfielder Enda Coughlan isn't included, however.

McDermott has also added Cratloe's Padraig Collins, who was a member of the Clare minor hurling team that reached the 2010 All-Ireland final, to his squad along with Kilfenora's Killian Malone and Stephen Tierney from St. Breckan's. But he must plan without half back Mark Tubridy who has emigrated to Australia.

Fair play to Crusheen..........
For a small village it amazes me that they can produce such a quality team.

WoodlawnPat , 18/12/2011 at 14:42

Fair play to Crusheen..........
I am a townie but to be fair they really got behind the team and I was delighted to see them do two in a row in the Clare championship... It was a real shame they couldn't win a Munster. I live in Australia but listened to the semi and both finals on clare fm and was devastated they didnt do it, but they did a great job representing the county!!

LohansRedHelmet , 16/12/2011 at 15:15

Fair play to Crusheen..........
I passed through Crusheen a few times between 5-8 December and loved the way they got behind their Senior Hurling team that did so well. I don't think I passed a house that didn't have the Crusheen flag outside it. I really wanted a Gort-Crusheen final but maybe next year. Congrats on a great year Crusheen!!!

New Championship Format
As there's not much happening on the field this time of year, and as just about every football county seems to be dissatisfied with both the national league and championship format, I'm going to propose a new format on each Hogan stand county forum.

I hope this will at least provoke debate.

Basically, this system is based on making the objective of the league games (i) Reaching the final phases of an open draw championship, rather than (ii) Redundant National league finals.
However Provisional Finals are retained by using a system which is based on to the Conference system used in American Grid-iron Football.

Incentives are supposed to be included at every stage so that teams aren't going through the motions in any match. It's not easy to explain these things on paper, but here goes;

Each Year the 32 Football Counties are divided into 4 "National Conferences" based on a seeding system determined by performance in the previous year.
For Example Dublin, Kerry, Cork and Tyrone might be seeded 1 next year, with each heading up one of 4 conferences.
Similarly Mayo, Donegal, Kildare & Meath might be seeded 2, and would also be placed in different conferences, each made up of 8 teams drawn from 8 pots of 4 teams ranked at levels 1-8.

For example, level 8 teams might include London. Carlow, Waterford and Clare, who would get the chance of seeing the top teams at their grounds using this system.

Each county would play 7 games in this "League" phase of the competition, which is very similar to how the 4 divisional leagues are played now, however without the finals given there is a new objective for these games which is explained as follows;

Later in the year, the 8 Provincial Finalists would be determined, not by championship as at present, but by the top 2 league records from each province, regardless of conference played in. Counties records would be compared across conferences first by points total, followed points difference, then points scored. (In the unlikely event of equal records mid-week play-offs could be used).

The 4 provisional finals would of course produce 4 winners, with these teams getting direct to the AI Quarter final as at present, having 8 competitive games under their belt.

The 4 provincial champions having qualified, conference placings would again be used to determine the 16 other teams with the best "League Records". If losing provincial finalists don't fall in to this category (possible but unlikely) they would exit at that stage.
2 series of an open draw "knock-out" championship, with home field advantage determined by league record, could quickly reduce 16 teams to 4 by the end of July, as is the case now.

8 teams now remaining, All Ireland Quarter finals, would take place and I'd suggest offering home field advantage to the Provincial winners to boost the significance of those titles and make up for the 2/4 week lay-off which they also experience with the current system, but without compensation.
Semi-finals & Final would be played in Croke Park as at present.

The 12 other teams who did not qualify for the All Ireland Series would play in a B Championship, with the prize playing in Croke Park on AI Final day before the AI Final, and a higher seeding the following year for teams which progress.

Although not perfect, the benefits of this system include;
1. Meaningful League Series, giving qualification for, and home field advantage within, the AI series.
2. Coveted Provincial Titles
3. Dublin & Kerry Regularly appearing in places like Aughrim and Carrick on Shannon
4. End of League Finals played in front of 10,000 people.
5. End of Back Door System
6. More meaningful games, and bigger attendances, for all counties.
7. Realistic target for Division 4 Teams.
8. Not playing the same teams year after year
9. And Best of all, all teams in all counties would be playing at the same times of year, leaving proper windows for Club.

Non Active Forum
I am disappointed about the lack of activity in Clare Hogan Stand forum compared to other counties. Last post was 17 Nov and on the headlines they are still talking about Crusheen been worried about thr Nial McCarthy threat!
I know there are committed GAA people in Clare - where are all the bloggers gone?
Where are all the comments about Sundays Munster club hurling final?

Come on Crusheen!!! - I will be glad to support them as representatives of Clare.

Clare boss hopes Kilmurry players will answer call
Its not long ago Clare were more then a match for Kerry and Cork in Munster. It would be a great help to teams like Clare if the Tommy Murphy Cup was brought back, at least then they would be playing teams at there own standered and could move on. I never understood why the ''weaker'' teams in football never took to the Tommy Murphy Cup, when you look at hurling with the Christy Ring Cup Westmeath and Carlow are going well now after winning it so why could football teams not do the same?
