Offaly manager Eamonn Kelly admits that his charges will have to be at their best to see off the challenge of Clare in the opening round of the NHL on Sunday.

The Faithful County take on the Banner in Ennis in the first game of the Division 1B campaign and it will be a tough match for the visitors.

Kelly admitted to the Midland Tribune that both sides will have different agendas for the remainder of the year, but he added that he was focused on his own players.

"Clare will be looking to be playing on the first Sunday in September. I have a good idea of the Clare championship. I was involved with Sixmilebridge and they have a huge pick up there. Hurling is on a high down there with their recent U-21 successes and they are probably a step ahead of us at the minute," said Kelly.

"We set our own targets with work rate and tackling. It is probably unrealistic to think that we will go down there and get a win. We all saw what happened when Offaly went down there last year and we don't want that to happen again."
