Mary Immaculate College, NUIG, GMIT and LIT all prevailed in the Fitzgibbon Cup this afternoon.

Eamonn Cregan's Mary Immaculate College assured themselves of a top-place finish in Group B with a facile 1-20 to 0-5 defeat of DIT at Parnells, with Limerick trio Declan Hannon, Cian Lynch and Darragh O'Donovan registering 16 points between them.

Meanwhile, NUIG's battling 0-16 to 0-15 victory over UL was to no avail as the Limerick college still progress to the last eight as runners-up in that section. Clare's Bobby Duggan pointed nine times for the victors, who needed a three-point winning margin to progress. Tipperary's John McGrath found the target nine times for the holders.

At the Mardyke, Davy Fitzgerald's LIT recorded a thrilling 2-15 to 1-14 win over UCC, with Peter Duggan and David Dempsey netting for the winners in the second half. Alan Cadogan's 52nd-minute major had propelled the hosts into a 1-13 to 1-12 lead but Dempsey struck the vital score four minutes later.

The result assures LIT of a home quarter-final tie, whilst eliminating UCC at the group stage for a second successive year.

In this afternoon's other game in the competition, GMIT ground out a 1-4 to 0-4 victory over UUJ in atrocious conditions at Carnmore. Darragh Burke netted the only goal of the game as GMIT sealed a quarter-final spot.

Meanwhile tonight, IT Carlow got the better of WIT, 1-8 to 1-5 in terrible conditions at Carlow, Both teams had already qualified for the knock out stages.

Favourites UCD established a commanding 1-7 to 0-2 interval lead against Maynooth University at Belfield but could not pull clear of a battling Kildare outfit. Final score 1-13 to 0-10 and a quarter final spot for the winners.

In the final Group B game both DCU and St Patricks-Mater Dei were already out of contention but served up an entertaining 2-17 to 1-20 draw. Pats hit the 1-20.
