Clare board forced to defend themselves

Clare chairman Michael McDonagh is adamant that the clubs were not snubbed when the decision was made to keep Davy Fitzgerald as senior hurling manager.

During the week, the County Board revealed that Davy Fitz would be kept on for another year, even though the Banner have failed to make it through the qualifiers for a second year running.

McDonagh has been forced to defend their action as the clubs were not consulted on the matter, but he stressed to the Clare Champion that the decision to hand Fitzgerald a three-year term in 2013 still stood.

"As an officer of the board, we spoke with each other and we also spoke with the majority of the players in the panel," stated McDonagh.

"They indicated to me that for them to go forward, they wanted Davy Fitzgerald as manager and they have reiterated that. The players are a crucial part in this set-up."

McDonagh revealed that the clubs would have the chance to voice their opinion at the September meeting of the county board.

"I will be allowing a discussion on it at the next county board meeting. The players and the management will be doing their own review and we will be reviewing it with them as well."
