Clare SFC: Kilkee surprise Kilmurry

July 28, 2014

Cratloe chairman Jack Chaplin hands over the Jack Daly cup to captain Martin Martin Murphy.
The race for the Jack Daly Cup got off to a sensational start at Doonbeg on Saturday when St. Senan's, Kilkee recorded a shock 0-10 to 0-9 victory over championship favourites Kilmurry-Ibickane.

The Seasiders needed a late point from Darragh Kelly to secure the win after the 2011 and 2012 champions had battled back from a 0-0 to 0-5 deficit in the first half. The defeat consigns Kilmurry to the losers' section where they will be joined by another of the fancied sides, Eire Og, who lost to holders Cratloe by 1-12 to 2-12 at Cusack Park on Saturday evening.

Dual star Podge Collins scored 1-2 early on as Cratloe took a 1-6 to 1-4 lead into the break. When Conor Ryan added a second goal in the 50th minute, they led by 2-11 to 1-8, but the town side rallied in the closing stages to leave just a goal in it.

Doora-Barefield, who lost the 2011 and 2012 county finals to Kilmurry-Ibrickane, opened their campaign with a 0-9 to 0-6 victory over Shannon Gaels.

There were also wins for Miltown, Clondegad, Cooraclare, Lissycasey and last year's runners-up Doonbeg, who comfortably saw off Ennistymon on a 2-15 to 0-5 scoreline.
