Roscommon manager Anthony Cunningham feels the GAA is taking the correct path in being cautious about when football and hurling return.

The Rossies should have already been in action defending their Connacht SFC crown with an opening round game against London on May 2 postponed back in March.

With no intercounty action due to resume before October 1, that’s a five-month delay at least before Roscommon are back in action.

Professional sport teams are likely to return to action later this year but Cunningham believes there is a big difference between the GAA and those other sports. And because of that he understands if it ends up being 2021 before we see intercounty games resume.

"I think it will take that bit longer for amateur sporting organisations in Ireland to return to play with regard to testing and cocooning,” Cunningham told RTE Sport.

"I know there is talk of the provinces getting back playing rugby behind closed doors, for example, but for us in the GAA, with the community and amateur ethos of our Association, I think even more precautions will have to be taken. If that means it’s next year that we get back, so be it."
