Referee shortage in Clare

January 14, 2018

New referees are needed in Clare.

Clare GAA is facing a refereeing crisis, a special county board meeting heard this week.

Chairman of the Clare referees administration committee Ger Hoey warned that some club games mightn't be played in the coming year if new referees aren't recruited.

"The age profile is over 40, with most over 50 and a number over 60. There were 720 games at adult level last year, 452 at underage hurling level and a further 300 at underage football level," he said.

"Add in 200 blitzes, primary and post-primary school games, camogie and ladies football and there are well over 2,000 games to be refereed. The pressure is on.

"There will be a foundation and level one course starting on Monday, February 26 and continuing on March 5 and 12."
